South Tangerang Eats: Sate Padang Edition

Spiced, yellow, chewy — that’s what comes to mind when I think of a good plate of Sate Padang. Unlike the more common Sate Ayam Madura or Sate Kambing from Solo, this dish offers a different kind of satay experience. The portion may be smaller, but the flavor is intense.

There are several regional varieties of Sate Padang — Padang Panjang, Pariaman, Kota, and Danguang-Danguang — each with its own unique flavor and spice blend. In Java, though, you’ll mostly come across Padang Panjang and Pariaman styles.

This time, I went for the Padang Panjang version, known for its thick, bold yellow sauce. The texture is rich, the spices are strong, and the heat is present but not overpowering.

The spot I visited is called Sate Padang Sektor 9 Group, better known as the Sate Padang stall next to Premier Bintaro Hospital. You’ll find it on Jl. Moh. Husni Thamrin, Pondok Jaya, Pondok Aren, South Tangerang, Banten 15224. Just look for the smoke from the satay grill and the red food cart — that’s your sign you’re in the right place. It’s a humble setup, with plastic chairs and no tables. You can eat there or get your order to go.

I ordered one portion: it came with ketupat (rice cakes), 10 skewers of satay made from tender beef tongue, all drenched in a piping hot yellow sauce unique to Sate Padang. The flavor of turmeric, galangal, and the mild heat from chilies and pepper instantly woke up my taste buds. Everything came together beautifully — the chewy texture of the meat, the thick and flavorful sauce, and the final touch: a generous sprinkle of crispy fried shallots that added the perfect crunch and aroma.

They also offer two topping options: crispy beef skin crackers (kerupuk kulit) or spicy cassava chips (keripik singkong pedas). Personally, I go with the spicy cassava chips — they add a fun crunch and just the right kick of heat to the dish.

A quick heads-up for first-time visitors: there’s no dedicated parking available at this stall, so if you’re coming by car, you’ll need to find street parking nearby or consider ordering takeaway. The setup is quite modest — just plastic chairs without tables — and during peak hours, it can get pretty crowded and the lighting is on the dim side, which may not be comfortable for everyone. That said, for just 35,000 rupiah per portion and an additional 5,000 rupiah for your choice of toppings, you’re getting a rich, flavorful, and satisfying meal — all under 40,000 rupiah. Sate Padang Sektor 9 Group may not look fancy, but it delivers on what really matters — flavor, comfort, and a touch of Padang tradition in every bite. If you’re ever around Bintaro, South Tangerang, and craving something bold and satisfying, this place is a must-try.

And don’t forget — come visit Indonesia!
