“For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.” ~ John 13:15
The most powerful form of leadership is not found in commands, but in conduct. The easiest way to lead is simply to lead by example. Jesus did not just give us a set of rules; He gave us a blueprint. Everything He did was a pattern for us to follow. He lived everything He taught.
Think about the moments in the Bible. For instance, when the disciples asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray,” it wasn’t because of a lecture on intercession. It was because they watched Him slip away to the mountainside, witnessing the power of His personal prayer life. In Matthew 17:16, something interesting happened. The man with the epileptic son, took his son to the disciples but they were unable to cure him. But why did the man take his son to the disciples? The man’s choice to approach them first makes perfect sense: as direct followers of Jesus, they were expected to carry on His healing ministry. After all, they had witnessed Jesus heal countless people. The disciples had not yet mastered this.
When leadership stems naturally from your lifestyle, teaching others becomes effortless.
Jesus taught us service by serving us. In the Upper Room, before a single word of the Last Supper was spoken, Jesus wrapped a towel around His waist and washed the dusty feet of His followers. He taught us love by loving us first. He demonstrated the ultimate standard of devotion, showing us that no greater love exists than for a man to lay down his life for his friends. Even His Speech was a blueprint. Scripture instructs us to let our speech be always seasoned with salt and grace. Peter testified to this reality when he looked at Jesus and said, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” His words carried weight because His life carried truth.
As a leader, you must ask yourself a sobering question: “What virtues do I want my sheep to imbibe? And have I first imbibed them myself?”
Our primary calling as leaders is to lead ourselves. We pave the path so that others can safely walk it. When you lead by example, it becomes incredibly easy to identify your sheep and see if they are truly following. But when your lifestyle contradicts your instructions, it becomes impossible to measure their growth.
In the book of Acts, the religious rulers looked at the boldness of Peter and John and marveled. The Bible says they took note that these men had been with Jesus. Why could the world tell? Because the disciples had watched Jesus live out the truth, and His example had become the evidence written in their own lives. If we want to see Christ-like traits in those we lead, they must first see Christ-like traits in us.
Is there an area in your leadership where you are demanding something from others that you have not yet mastered yourself? How can you bridge that gap today?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for being the ultimate blueprint of a great leader. Forgive me for the times I have spoken words without backing them up with my actions. Let my life be such a clear reflection of Your love, grace, and authority that anyone who follows me is ultimately led straight to You. Amen.
