Chemical company poisons everyone silently

Recently watched this interesting video(https://lnkd.in/gfSukd22) on a topic which I came across a few years back after watching the movie “Dark Waters(2019)” which follows the story of a farmer(Earl Tennant) and a Lawyer(Robert Bilott) who tries to investigate the reason behind the animals in Earl’s farm dying of unknown reasons. Turns out the reason was to do a major chemical company a few miles away was dumping the untreated water coming out from its factories with PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) into the nearby water streams, which was poisoning the animals and humans too, who drink those waters.

This is about DuPont and 3M, which produced PFAS-laden products, such as Teflon. They are dubbed “forever chemicals” because they do not break down naturally, remaining in the environment and human body for decades. These synthetic compounds are renowned for their resistance to water, oil, and heat, making them prevalent in various consumer products, including non-stick cookware, water-repellent clothing, and firefighting foams. There are links identified between PFAS exposure and various health issues, such as cancer, hormonal disruptions, liver damage, reproductive issues and immune system effects. Despite this, these companies continued manufacturing and intentionally hid findings from the public and regulators.

Until Robert Bilott and Earl Tennant took them to court, but still the company kept on denying any wrongdoing, due to these chemicals being very new to the market, and very little research had been done on them for potential harmful effects. But eventually, after multiple lawsuits, the companies were found guilty of wrongdoing and hiding all the harmful effects of PFAS from authorities and the public. They had to agree to make settlements to resolve lawsuits, which were mostly like 5–10% of their annual income. The irony was that Dupont claimed they had a safer alternative to PFAS in 2009 called “GenX “, which had the same significant health risks.

The only way people can potentially be safe from PFAS exposure is to do a blood test on how much PFAS is already in your blood and get a doctor’s recommendation, use a certified PFAS water filter for your water system, check for PFAS in your products & replace them with PFAS-free products(It would be mentioned as “PFAS-Free”, “PFOA/PFOS-Free”, “Fluorine-free”, “No Forever Chemicals”) and finally follow a healthy lifestyle(healthy diet, good sleep & exercise).
