The Lie We Keep Repeating

Whenever someone talks about being insecure about their appearance, the same responses appear almost instantly.

“Looks don’t matter.”

“Just be confident.”

“Personality is what counts.”

People say these things with such certainty that sometimes I wonder whether they actually believe them.

Because if looks don’t matter, why is attractiveness one of the first things we notice about strangers? Why do people spend hours choosing clothes, styling their hair, taking photos, editing those photos, and chasing beauty standards that change every few years? Why do attractive people receive compliments for simply existing while others have to work twice as hard to be noticed?

I have spent enough time observing people to know that appearance is not some superficial detail floating on the surface of life. It is woven into almost everything. Friendships, relationships, opportunities, first impressions, social media, confidence, and sometimes even the way strangers treat you.

The uncomfortable truth is that most people don’t consciously judge others by their looks. They don’t wake up and decide to. It happens automatically, somewhere beneath awareness. A face is seen, an impression is formed, and a story is written before a single word is spoken.

Maybe that sounds cynical. Maybe it is.

But what feels more dishonest is pretending that beauty doesn’t hold power.

So please don’t tell me that looks don’t matter.

Don’t tell me that appearance is irrelevant or that the world has somehow evolved beyond judging people by what they see.

Because it does matter.

Maybe not equally. Maybe not fairly. Maybe not in ways people openly admit.

But it matters.

It matters in conversations, in opportunities, in attraction, in attention, and in ways so subtle that people rarely notice them.

And perhaps that is what makes it frustrating.

Not that appearance influences our lives.

But that everyone knows it does, while continuing to pretend otherwise.
