In my previous blog, I explained what Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is and how it works.
As discussed, PCR is a laboratory technique used to amplify specific segments of DNA by repeatedly heating and cooling the DNA to separate its strands and copy the target region using primers, nucleotides and DNA polymerase. This process enables the production of millions of DNA copies in a short time, making it an essential technique in medical, forensic and research applications. In this blog, we will explore the overview of various types of PCR.
Overview of PCR Types:
- Conventional PCR: Conventional PCR amplifies a specific DNA fragment, with detection performed at the end using gel electrophoresis.
- Quantitative Real-Time PCR (qRT-PCR): qRT-PCR measures DNA amplification in real time using fluorescent dyes or probes, allowing researchers to quantify DNA levels accurately.
- Reverse Transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR): RT-PCR first converts RNA into DNA before amplification. It is particularly useful for studying gene expression or detecting RNA viruses.
- Nested PCR: Nested PCR uses two sets of primers to enhance specificity, making it ideal for detecting low-abundance DNA.
- Specialized PCR Variants This category includes Hot Start PCR, Touchdown PCR, Colony PCR, Overlapping PCR and more, each designed to address specific experimental challenges.
PCR has numerous variations, each with its own unique applications and advantages. In my upcoming blogs, I will dive deeper into each type, explaining how they work and their practical uses in science and medicine.
