My friend Bill, in addition to being a talented writer and fun raconteur, plays percussion. While it’s possible you have read a tech manual he wrote, you have likely never seen or heard him. He occasionally plays with two buddies at a local pub in some obscure town… not sure his band even has a name… but on a visit, I was lucky enough to see him jamming with his friends. He has a wide variety of instruments, some home grown, like the rattles he made from seed pods from my poinciana tree.

After the gig, I complimented him on his playing. I said “I’ve never heard the xylophone sound so good.”

“That, my friend,” he replied, “is not a xylophone. It’s a vibraphone. See, the bars underneath the keys are metal, not wood. Different sound. And this one has a pedal which damps the sound.”

Wow, I learn something new every day.
