Last night the Grit channel, 31–3 on OTA in NYC, ran Fort Defiance (1951), a solid western starring Ben Johnson and Peter Graves. Also in the cast is Dennis Moore, not to be confused with the Robin Hood-like Monty Python character (“He steals from the poor and gives to the rich — stupid bitch!”). He has 267 titles under his name at IMDb, career spanning 1932–1961 when he retired from the screen and opened a gift shop. Here’s a note at the bottom of his listing: “He seriously injured co-star Jimmy Wakely in a 1945 knife attack that occurred after a night of heavy drinking, apparently due to a budding professional jealousy over Wakely’s popularity. Wakely survived the attack and, surprisingly, did not press charges. Even more surprisingly, Moore returned to co-star with Wakely in Rainbow Over the Rockies (1947) and Roaring Westward (1949).” He was a TV mainstay throughout the ’50s. He was an excellent woodworker and a transport pilot. A father of one, he was taken by heart disease at 56 in 1964. Wakely performed on radio and at rodeos as well as on the big and small screen. There are 65 title under his name, screen career spanning 1939-’50. He did duets with Margaret Whiting but sang mostly country. A father of four, he passed away at 68 in 1982. M. Reynolds; Bukharin and the Bolshevik Revolution: A Political Biography, 1888–1938 by Stephen F. Cohen… Ira, a retired tailor, brought me another bottle of Poland Spring and regaled me with a brush with a celebrity, prompted by my mentioning House of Wax (1953). He was working at B. Altman in Manhattan when in came Vincent Price accompanied by a beautiful woman. The star said: “Excuse me, young man, do you have any extra long suits?” The store didn’t, but Ira, without fawning, although he knew that Price knew he was recognized, called a place on Madison Avenue and directed the Master of Macabre to it. Price was six-four. Ira described him as “elegant.” Thank you, my friend.
