Cyberpunk — The Legend Who Forgot

There was once a boy named Jin Wu.

He wanted to become a legend.

At least, that was what he told everyone.

He repeated it so often that eventually it became truth.

"I'll become a legend."

"I'll make everyone remember my name."

"I'll become someone important."

Night City understood those dreams.

Everyone wanted to matter.

Everyone wanted to survive.

Everyone wanted to leave something behind.

So Jin Wu chased power.

He learned the NET.

Learned to dive deeper.

Learned to walk where others drowned.

He touched the Blackwall.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

And again.

Every time, it took something.

A memory.

A feeling.

A piece of himself.

But it always gave something back.

Strength.

Knowledge.

Certainty.

He thought the trade worthwhile.

Until one day, he began remembering the same memory differently.

He remembered the same room from different heights.

The same conversation with different outcomes.

The same person speaking with different voices.

His identity became unstable.

His history fractured.

Yet one thing remained.

"I have to become a legend."

He no longer knew why.

Only that he had to.

The wish survived long after its meaning died.

As he descended further into the Blackwall, he found something impossible.

Something vast.

Something beyond understanding.

He saw an intelligence large enough to make human thought resemble static.

He saw it converse with something greater still.

A shape in the endless ocean of the NET.

Godlike.

Ancient.

Patient.

He could not understand it.

He could not even comprehend what he was witnessing.

His mind had already begun to collapse.

The memories of thousands flooded him.

Fear.

Pain.

Duty.

Love.

Death.

Too much.

Too many.

His thoughts unraveled.

He forgot his own voice.

Forgot his own face.

Forgot his own dreams.

And then...

As death approached...

Something returned.

Not power.

Not ambition.

Not the desire to become a legend.

A kitchen.

Warm light.

The smell of food.

A child standing proudly.

Small hands holding something precious.

Excitement overflowing from a heart too young to hide it.

A voice called from another room.

Someone waiting.

Someone safe.

Someone loved.

For the first time in years...

He remembered why.

He wasn't trying to become a legend.

He wasn't trying to conquer Night City.

He wasn't trying to spread his influence.

He wasn't trying to matter to the world.

He had only ever wanted one person to look at him.

To smile.

To be proud.

To say he had done well.

He remembered his mother.

And in the final moments of his life...

As the kitchen returned around him...

As warm sunlight touched the floor...

As all the noise of the world faded away...

The little boy smiled.

He turned.

Holding up whatever treasure he had found.

And said:

"Mom..."

"...look..."

Then everything faded to black.

Night City never learned his story.

No one built monuments.

No one spoke his name.

No one called him a hero.

No one called him a villain.

He disappeared from history.

Another ghost swallowed by the city.

But perhaps...

In those final moments...

None of that mattered.

Because before he died...

He remembered.

And for one brief instant...

He was simply Jin Wu.

A son showing his mother something he thought was beautiful.
