Why I Love Buying Books More Than Finishing Them

My TBR keeps growing… and I’m okay with that.

There’s something I’ve realized about myself as a reader.

I love buying books.

A lot.

More than I actually love finishing them.

And for a long time, I felt a little guilty about that.

Because shouldn’t reading be about… reading? Not collecting books you might not get to anytime soon?

But the more I thought about it, the more I understood something:

Buying books and reading books are two very different experiences — and I enjoy both in different ways.

The Excitement of Possibility

When I buy a book, I’m not just buying pages.

I’m buying the possibility of a story.

The idea that one day, I’ll sit down, open it, and get lost in something completely new. That anticipation — that “I can’t wait to read this” feeling — is a kind of happiness on its own.

It’s quiet, but it’s real.

And honestly, sometimes that feeling is just as satisfying as actually finishing the book.

The Comfort of Having Books Around

There’s also something comforting about seeing books around me.

A growing TBR doesn’t stress me out the way it used to.

It feels… reassuring.

Like I’ll never run out of stories. Like there’s always something waiting for me, no matter what mood I’m in.

Some people see unread books as a task.

I see them as options.

Not Every Book Is Meant for Right Now

I used to think I had to read every book I bought immediately.

Now I don’t.

Some books sit on my shelf for months — even years — before I finally pick them up.

And when I do, it feels right.

Because reading isn’t just about the book.

Sometimes a book doesn’t connect with you because it’s not meant for the version of you that you are right now.

And that’s okay.

For a long time, I felt like I was doing something wrong.

Like I was a “bad reader” for not finishing everything I bought.

But I’ve stopped thinking that way.

Because being a reader doesn’t mean being perfect.

It doesn’t mean finishing every book. It doesn’t mean reading at a certain speed. It doesn’t mean keeping your TBR under control.

It just means you love books.
