I don’t remember how much of this story I’ve already written about, and I’m too full of delicious taco salad to look it up, so skip any parts you already know and then read the rest.
I screwed up making hotel reservations for our June Fox family reunion; I didn’t double check the dates and ended up making the reservations for the weekend before. I tried to cancel and get a refund and was told, “No.” I tried to change the dates and was told the hotel was booked solid the following weekend.
I was all for just chalking it up as a loss, but hubby insisted we were not going to waste over $500, so we’d go anyway. I pointed out that that would just cost us more money in gas and food, but he said we were going to drive the 6 hours one way anyway and find things to do. It’s Virginia, a beautiful, historic state. Surely there would be interesting things to do.
Look up Elkton, Virginia. Better yet, look up Massanutten Resort right near Elkton. It is in a corner of Virginia that has nothing. I’m not kidding; it is Nowhere, VA. My cousin was helping me research the area on Tuesday, and we were laughing so hard, our stomachs hurt. Visit the General Store, where you can find anything from feed to antiques. I could probably admire the farm tools and baby chicks there, too. My cousin vacations in places like Scotland and Iceland. I could go to the General Store.
Fine dining includes the Grub and Grab restaurant. I think there were a few other places to eat, maybe even nice ones that serve Italian or seafood, but the Grub and Grab really appealed to our sense of humor.
She asked, “When are you leaving?” I told her, “Sunday.” She said, “As soon as possible, right?” I was rolling on the floor by then.
This morning, hubby said, “I’m going to call and see if I can get our money refunded.” I had wanted him to make the call in the first place, because I have a theory that a male voice carries more weight than a female one. At first, he got the same story I did: no refund was possible. He said two words: “Why not?” The next thing I knew, he was saying, “So the money will be back in my wife’s account in 7 to 10 days? Thank you very much.”
Either I’m right about the male/female voice thing, or I should have said, “Why not?” and I could have fixed everything.
Shortly after the phone call, we left for my eye appointment. I was pretty sure I’d need new glasses, and I was right. I didn’t think I’d have to pay for them until I pick them up in two weeks, but I was wrong. I was also pretty sure there wasn’t enough in the checking account to cover the $220, so when we got home, I went straight to the computer to check my balance, sure that the $35 overdraft fee would already be there.
It wasn’t. Instead, I found I had more money in the account even after the withdrawal for the glasses than I had this morning. I scrolled down and found — 7 to 10 days had turned into 2 hours. The refund from the hotel was already there.
Yup, I sure could use more days like this. Every day for the rest of my life would be nice.
I hope you have many days like the one I had today!
