Family Power: How Political Dynasties Shape Communities

“Same surnames, different elections.” In many communities, political power returns to the same families, which raises a question if democracy truly gives every citizen an equal voice. Despite the many occasional success stories, many people still believe political dynasties weaken democratic accountability. In most cases, when power remains within a few families, government transparency often falls. Citizens may feel discouraged from voting or participating in politics because they believe elections are already controlled by powerful clans. This kind of situation reduces the trust within our government institutions and low civic engagement within communities.

In most cases, this can affect the youth. The young people may feel more politically apathetic when they repeatedly see the same surnames dominate elections. In many communities, talented young leaders, capable of creating real and lasting change, struggle to enter politics because they lack the financial resources or family connections. This creates a huge limit in innovation, diversity, and an opportunity to create meaningful and sustainable change for the next generation.

According to a study analyzing Philippine elections from 2004 to 2022, political dynasties have become more interconnected and dominant over time. Provinces with stronger dynastic networks were associated with lower Human Development Index (HDI) scores and weaker political competition. However, supporters of political dynasties argue that experienced political families can provide stability and continuity in governance. In some communities, voters continue supporting dynastic leaders because they are familiar, accessible, or have previously delivered public services. Some families also build long-term political relationships that allow projects to continue across generations.

Yet, we need to remember that leadership should be earned through service, not inherited through a name. Choosing government officials outside political dynasties is important because it gives a fair chance for the people to lead and bring new ideas to the community. Leaders who are not part of powerful political families may focus more on serving the people instead of protecting the legacy of their family. When political dynasties continue to dominate, many communities suffer from the limited opportunities, unequal access to resources, and lack of trust in the government because power remains only within the families.

As the youth, we play a huge important role in creating change. The young people have the power to become informed voters, researching candidates beyond their surnames, participating in discussions about social issues, and encouraging others to take part in public service — to serve the community and those in need. The youth has the power to fight misinformation, spread awareness, and inspire others to take initiative and create a difference to a greater change for our country. Even through small actions, such as attending local forums, volunteering in community programs, or speaking up about issues that matter can help strengthen.
