A Borrowed Silence

This is not a cinematic piece, nor a video, but rather a visual composition that resists definition outside the viewer.

From the perspective of the author, it appears as an autoethnographic phantasmagoria, suspended between the waking world and the elusive terrain of dreams.

Here, the recurring nightmare is not just a subject but the very medium itself — a liminal zone where memory, identity, and imagination dissolve and reconstitute. Each attempted memory is a shard of a dream, repeatedly lost and sought, never fully grasped: a self-study that slips away as soon as it is approached, much like the dream that inspired it.

The nightmare is not reconstructed but conjured — half-remembered, half-invented, always just out of reach; a fugitive reality or an outgrown semblance, ultimately left behind with its unlived futures.

This sound-led, listening-driven piece premiered at the impressive Goldsmiths’ Sonics Immersive Media Labs. Its extended theatrical performance version utilised an ambisonic environment, creating an expanded cinematic experience.
