When Dreams Meet Reality: Living in the Space Between

You know that feeling when you’re sitting in your own life but it feels like you’re watching someone else’s movie? That’s me, every single day.

I wake up next to someone who loves me deeply. Ten years of his love, unwavering and real. He’s family – literally, we share the same blood, the same childhood memories. Everyone says how lucky I am. And I know they’re right. I should feel lucky.

But I don’t.

God, that sounds awful, doesn’t it? Here I am, complaining about being loved. But it’s more complicated than that. It’s like wearing a beautiful dress that’s the wrong size – everyone tells you how gorgeous you look, but you can’t breathe in it.

I had dreams once. Big, messy, impossible dreams. I wanted to travel alone and get lost in new cities. I wanted to choose my own love story, not inherit one. I wanted to make mistakes that were completely mine. I wanted to figure out who I was when nobody was watching, when I wasn’t someone’s wife or cousin or any role that came with instructions.

Instead, I’m living a life that makes perfect sense to everyone else. The relatives nod approvingly. “Such a good match,” they say. “He takes care of her so well.” And he does. He really does. Which makes this so much harder.

How do you grieve a life you never lived? How do you mourn dreams that feel selfish to even whisper? Some nights I lie awake and wonder what would have happened if I’d been braver, if I’d said no, if I’d chosen uncertainty over safety.

The depression creeps in through these cracks – the space between what is and what could have been. It’s not dramatic or obvious. It’s just this quiet, persistent ache. Like being homesick for a place you’ve never been.

I have a 2.5-year-old who looks at me with such trust, such pure love. When I watch him discover the world, I see all the possibilities I once dreamed of. But I also panic sometimes. How do I teach him to follow his dreams when I’m still figuring out what mine were? How do I show him what it means to be true to yourself when I’m not sure I know how?

I feel guilty writing this. Guilty for not being grateful enough. Guilty for wanting more when I have so much. Guilty for loving him but not loving this life we’ve built together.

But maybe guilt isn’t the answer. Maybe the answer is being honest about this messy, complicated space I’m living in. Maybe it’s okay to love someone and still feel trapped. Maybe it’s okay to be grateful and sad at the same time.

I don’t have answers yet. I’m just trying to figure out how to honor both the life I have and the dreams I carry. Maybe that’s enough for now. Maybe that’s how you start finding your way back to yourself 🤷🏻‍♀️
