Sloterdijk. Freud. the margins.

in the third volume of Spheres, Foams, Peter Sloterdijk argues that the truly revolutionary accomplishment of Freud’s work was to bring the peripheral into the center. to redirect focus from the traditional themes of research to elements of human experience that had, until then, been largely dismissed and ignored. Freud turned his attention to dreams, jokes, slips of the tongue. he argued we could possibly learn more about who we are from what we dreamed and from our unconscious lives than we could our conscious ones. as one of the three original practitioners of so-called ‘hermeneutics of suspicion’ (the others, of course, being Nietzsche and Marx), Freud is perhaps still unappreciated today for just Sloterdijk’s point: he re-oriented our relationship with the margins and the periphery. with the dismissed, the excluded, the forgotten.
