Choose Your Hard

We know it even if we rarely acknowledge. Life is hard for everyone. It is not sort of hard. It is not sometimes hard. It is genuinely, relentlessly, no exceptions hard. And sorry, you don’t get to opt out (all things being equal). That’s not pessimism, that’s just the baseline. That’s the floor we’re all standing on.

So when someone says “I just want a soft life,” I don’t laugh at them. I get it. I want that too. But wanting it and finding it are two different things.

I mean, just look around you. In this life, there is no “easy” zone. There is the hard of action: the early mornings, the discipline of the mind, the discomfort of growth, and the exhaustion that comes from building something meaningful. This path is rough and demanding, requiring us to pay our dues upfront in sweat and focus.

Then, there is the hard of inaction: the slow decay of potential, the heavy sigh of regret, the physical toll of neglect. This path is deceptive because it feels easy at first, but its cost is compounded with interest, often in the form of a disappointing life.

Everything worth having carries a price. Health is hard, but illness is harder. Financial discipline is hard, but poverty is harder. Marriage? Singleness?

Struggle is the only constant. There is no life without pain.

And I think people get confused. They think if they just make the right choice i.e. japa, find a helper, the right partner, sponsor, the right job, the right money etc, the hard part just disappears. But that’s not how it works. The hard just changes shape. It trades one face for another.

So what do you do with that?

You stop looking for the life that isn’t hard. You look for the life where the hard is worth it. But, not all hard is the same. The exhaustion of building something you believe in feels different from the one from building something you hate.

So here’s my argument, my thesis, the only thing I really believe about this: stop asking how to make life less hard. Start asking which hard you’re willing to carry. Because you’re going to carry something. Everyone does.
