If I Could Hold You Once

When one embrace feels enough to melt the heaviest stone a heart can carry.

If I could hold you once,

In the warmth of your embrace,

I would melt the giant stone

That has long rested upon my heart.

If I could hold you once,

To the rhythm of your breath,

I would awaken again,

Breaking the silence that has lived within me.

If I could hold you once,

I would write upon my eyelids

All the unspoken verses of love.

With my lips upon your forehead,

I would forget the weariness of the world.

If I could hold you once,

Within the shelter of your hands,

I would find

The address of an everlasting peace.

If I could hold you once –

I would cast my sorrows into the fire,

Clear away life’s scattered ruins with both my hands,

And in the fertile soil of a living heart,

I would sow the seeds of a pure and gentle love.
