No “Seasoning Period”: Why a Boring Nasdaq Rule Change Actually Caught My Attention

I almost scrolled past this one. “Nasdaq changes listing rule” doesn’t exactly grab you. But I kept reading, and it turned out to matter — it touches two funds I actually hold: Fidelity Global Technology Fund and Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust.

As a 59-year-old new to investing, here’s what I’ve learned: my portfolio usually changes because of decisions made by people I’ve never heard of, not because of anything I did.

What changed

Companies used to wait months — sometimes a year — before joining a big index like the Nasdaq 100. That wait is gone. Now it’s just 15 days.

Scottish Mortgage actively hunts for exactly the kind of newly-listed, fast-growing companies this rule pushes into the spotlight faster. My mistake was assuming “no index fund, no problem.” Active or passive, every fund swims in the same water.

What I’m actually doing

I now check my funds’ top 10 holdings every few months instead of just the return number. And if something new and fast-rising shows up, I ask why instead of assuming the manager’s got it covered.

Not a crisis. Just a reminder that what’s inside my funds can quietly shift without me noticing.
