The Importance of Holistic Approach in Healthcare
Message To Yoga Professionals
Introduction
We have forgotten to pay attention to what is happening within our body, mind, and emotions. We have lost sight of the vital life force that infuses our being, leading to a disruption in the body’s homeostatic balance, emotional volatility, and mental instability. This disconnection from the deeper aspects of our being has contributed to a growing epidemic of chronic health conditions, which is rooted in an imbalance of the physiological, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of the human experience. This multifaceted nature of health is what encompasses the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of an individual.
Health
Historically, the medical model has taken a narrow, disease-focused approach, often neglecting the interconnected nature of these dimensions. However, in recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need for a more holistic approach to healthcare. One of the key aspects of a holistic approach to healthcare is the importance of considering the whole person, rather than just the disease or condition. This includes understanding the individual’s social, cultural, and environmental factors, as well as their psychological and spiritual well-being. By taking this broader perspective, healthcare practitioners can develop a more comprehensive understanding of the patient’s needs and address them in a more effective and personalized manner.
The Modern Approach to Health
The modern approach to health has often been narrow and disease-focused, overlooking the interconnected nature of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. This pathogenic orientation fails to address the deeper, underlying factors that contribute to an individual’s overall health and well-being.
However, there is a growing recognition of the need for a more holistic approach to healthcare that considers the whole person, rather than just the disease or condition. This holistic perspective acknowledges that the restoration of balance and harmony within the individual is crucial for both the prevention and treatment of disease. By considering the individual’s various dimensions, healthcare providers can develop a more comprehensive understanding of the patient’s unique circumstances and tailor their interventions accordingly.
The implementation of a holistic approach to healthcare has been shown to lead to significant improvements in the patient’s overall well-being, addressing their physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual needs. This modern approach to Salutogenesis is much better than the Pathogenesis. Salutogenesis focuses on the individual as a whole. This concept of “wholism” emphasizes the interconnectedness of these various domains and the importance of addressing them in an integrated manner, recognizing that the individual is a complex and multidimensional being whose health and well-being are influenced by a wide range of factors.
Pathogenesis and Salutogenesis:
The traditional medical model has often been criticized for its narrow, disease-focused approach, overlooking the interconnected nature of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. This pathogenic orientation primarily concentrates on the etiology and treatment of diseases and therefore, fails to address the deeper, underlying factors that contribute to an individual’s overall health and well-being.
In contrast, the concept of salutogenesis emphasizes the importance of understanding and promoting the factors that create, maintain, and enhance health. This holistic perspective acknowledges that the restoration of balance and harmony within the individual is crucial for both the prevention and treatment of disease. It focuses on the sense of coherence -comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness of the individual. By considering the individual’s social, cultural, and environmental contexts, as well as their psychological and spiritual needs, healthcare providers can develop a more comprehensive understanding of the patient’s unique circumstances and tailor their interventions accordingly.
This shift towards a salutogenic approach represents a fundamental paradigm change in healthcare, moving away from a reductionist, disease-centric model and towards a more integrative, patient-centered framework. By embracing this holistic perspective, healthcare systems can empower individuals to take an active role in their own health and wellness journey, leading to more sustainable and transformative outcomes for both the patient and the broader community. The shift towards a more holistic approach to healthcare is not only beneficial for the patients but also for the healthcare system as a whole.
Yoga: Ancient Approach to Health
Acharya Sushruta’s approach emphasized Salutogenic Telescopy, which involves a holistic examination of the factors that promote health and well-being. He recognized that the restoration of balance and harmony within the individual is crucial for the prevention and treatment of disease.

samadoṣa: samāgniśca samadhātumalakriya:| prasannātmendriyamanā: svastha ityabhidhīyate||
[Sushruta Samhita -15/41]
According to Acharya Sushruta, health is not merely the absence of disease, but a state of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. This holistic view is further supported by the concept of “Purna Swaroopa” or the wholeness of the individual, which is central to the Yogic tradition. Specifically, Sushruta emphasized the importance of sama dosha, sama agni, and sama dhatu mala kriya — the balanced and harmonious functioning of the body’s fundamental elements, metabolic processes, and waste elimination. This state of Prasann atma, indriya, and manas — the balanced and harmonious functioning of the body, senses, and mind — is the essence of Swastha or wellness.

Maharshi Patanjali explains that yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the Chitta. When the Chitta is calm and stable, one can experience the true self, the Purna Swaroopa. But when one becomes entangled with the vrittis, one becomes disconnected from their true self and inner harmonious state. This disconnection leads to a state of disharmony within the individual, manifesting as physical, mental, and emotional imbalances that can ultimately result in disease and ill-health.
Thirumoolar, the Tamil Siddha Yogi, who has given 3000 veses on yoga explains attanga yoga. He talks about mala or impurities in the body and mind, which if not cleared, can lead to disease and ill-health. The three malas are — aanava mala (Me Only), kanva mala(klesha karma) and kavayi (avidya). He emphasizes the importance of purification and detoxification practices to maintain a state of balance and harmony.
Application of Yoga Chikitsa
Incorporating Yoga Chikitsa, the therapeutic application of Yoga, is essential for a truly holistic approach to healthcare. We have forgotten the inherent wholeness, or Purna Swaroopa, of the human being. By integrating Yoga’s mind-body practices, such as asana, pranayama, and dharna-dhyan, healthcare providers can address the interconnected aspects of a patient’s well-being — the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. This comprehensive approach empowers individuals to take an active role in their healing and wellness journey, leading to more sustainable and transformative health outcomes. Through the practice of Yoga Chikitsa, patients can rediscover their inherent balance and harmony, restoring the homeostatic equilibrium that is essential for optimal health and well-being.

The concept of “Swastha,” or wellness, is deeply rooted in the yogic tradition and is explained as a state of being established in one’s true self, or Purna Swaroopa. This Humanistic approach to medicine is fundamental to Yoga Chikitsa. Maharishi Patanjali, in the Yoga Sutras, emphasized the importance of transcending mental fluctuations to achieve a state of equilibrium, self-realization, and connection with the higher aspects of one’s being. This state of equipoise, or Samatvam, is essential for maintaining optimal health and well-being. Conversely, the failure to maintain this state of balance leads to disease and a state of disequilibrium, moving one away from the holistic state of wellness towards illness and disharmony within the body, mind, and spirit.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the holistic approach to healthcare, as exemplified by the principles of Yoga Chikitsa, represents a fundamental shift in the way we understand and address the health and well-being of individuals. By embracing a more comprehensive, patient-centered perspective that considers the interconnected nature of the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual domains, healthcare providers can develop more effective and transformative interventions. This empowers individuals to take an active role in their own healing and wellness journeys. Practices such as Vairagya (detachment) and Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses) can help individuals navigate the fluctuations of the mind and senses, promoting a greater sense of balance and harmony.
