The Horse That Got Kendrick Carmouche Suspended Just Won Him a Quarter Million Dollars

He is one of the only Black jockeys riding at this level. He got suspended for wrecking a race. A year later, on the same horse, he won it by ten lengths.

Four days ago, a piece went up arguing that Kendrick Carmouche was not finished writing his story. Hours later, at Saratoga Race Course, he proved it in a way no one could have scripted.

On July 4, 2026, Carmouche rode Phileas Fogg to a ten-length victory in the Grade 2 Suburban Stakes, a $500,000 race at Saratoga. It was not just a win. It was a very specific kind of redemption, on the very horse that had gotten him suspended in the first place.

A year after Phileas Fogg’s troubled start in the 2025 Jockey Club Gold Cup led to Carmouche’s suspension, the pair returned to Saratoga and won the Suburban by ten lengths, a dominant repeat of the horse’s win the year before.

The story is bigger than one jockey erasing one bad afternoon. Carmouche is one of the few Black jockeys competing at this level of the sport, and every graded stakes trophy adds to a career built largely without the Kentucky Derby spotlight that follows other riders with far shorter resumes.

Here is what happened last year. In the 2025 Jockey Club Gold Cup, also at Saratoga, Carmouche and Phileas Fogg broke inward at the start. The horse shied into another runner, which bumped into another, and Irad Ortiz Jr. was unseated from his mount in an accidental chain reaction — nothing about the start was deliberate, but stewards ruled the disqualification and suspension regardless.

Phileas Fogg, who had crossed the wire third, was disqualified and declared unplaced. New York stewards later handed Carmouche a five day suspension for the incident, timed to be served at the very meet where it happened, Saratoga, a full year later.

The suspension landed right at the start of this year’s Saratoga season. Carmouche was set to miss July 3, 5, 9, 10, and 11.

But under New York racing rules, he was specifically permitted to ride Phileas Fogg in one race that fell inside that window:

the July 4 Suburban Stakes, the same race the horse had won the year before.

Carmouche did not just ride him. He dominated on him.

Phileas Fogg broke alertly, went straight to the front, and was never seriously challenged. He hit the far turn with a seven length lead and kept extending it, crossing the wire in 2:01.70, ten lengths clear of Hit Show, last year’s Dubai World Cup winner, who rallied for second.

Favored Antiquarian, who had beaten Phileas Fogg in that same Jockey Club Gold Cup the year before, stumbled at the break and never recovered, finishing fourth.

“By the time I turned on the backside, I knew the race was won,”

Carmouche said afterward.

“My horse was taking me. At no part during the race he was straining. I just had to wait to pull the trigger. I didn’t even do that. I just let him go a little.”

Trainer Gustavo Rodriguez, who watched the horse rebound from a rough winter, put it more simply:

“He got stronger. He looks better than last year. Like a tank.”

Carmouche himself did not dodge the story sitting underneath the win. Asked about the connection between the Gold Cup disqualification and this year’s Suburban, he was direct about it.

“Sometimes we make decisions in the race that can cost not only myself but can cost the owner,”

Carmouche said.

“Meanwhile, they did keep me on the horse, and we made it back to where we should be.”

That sentence is worth sitting with. A trainer and an ownership group had every reason to move on to another rider after a disqualification and a public collision that ended with a fellow jockey on the ground. They didn’t.

They kept Carmouche in the saddle, and a year later he brought their horse back to the same race, on the same track, and beat the field by ten lengths instead of the photo finish head he needed to win it with the last time.

The victory pushed Phileas Fogg past the million dollar mark in career earnings, at $1,170,373, and added $275,000 to those numbers in a single afternoon.

For Carmouche, it added another graded stakes trophy to a career that has already passed 4,200 wins, and it did so during the same week his own piece was arguing that the sport still owes him its full attention.

Carmouche has not been to the Kentucky Derby since 2021. Isaac Murphy won three Derbies and died broke, buried in an unmarked grave.

Kendrick Carmouche is still riding, still winning, and apparently still capable of turning the worst moment of his recent career into the best afternoon of his summer, on the very same horse.
