Circularity Is Becoming Europe’s New Economic Reality
Last week I attended the Sustainable Development Forum 2026 at Cambridge Judge Business School, where leaders from the UN, industry, finance, academia, and technology gathered around one central theme:
Circularity is no longer a sustainability ambition — it is becoming an economic necessity.
Across the discussions, one message became increasingly clear: Europe is entering a new phase where resilience, competitiveness, and sustainability are becoming deeply interconnected.
Climate impacts, geopolitical instability, supply chain disruptions, and shortages of critical raw materials are forcing organizations to rethink how we design, operate, and sustain our economic systems. The traditional linear model — take, make, dispose — is reaching its limits.
Circularity is emerging as the response.
What struck me most during the forum was how strongly the conversation has shifted from vision to execution. Circular economy is no longer discussed as an isolated ESG initiative, but as a practical framework for building resilient infrastructures, mobility systems, logistics networks, and industries.
At the same time, this transition cannot happen without data.
As European legislation accelerates — particularly around Digital Product Passports and cross-sector sustainability reporting — the need to exchange trusted information across value chains is growing rapidly. Organizations increasingly need visibility into materials, lifecycle performance, emissions, reuse potential, and supply chain dependencies.
This is driving major European initiatives around federated data infrastructure, interoperability, and trusted data-sharing ecosystems.
But technology alone is not enough.
One important theme throughout the forum was that circular transformation requires collaboration across entire value chains — and that is often where complexity begins. Different stakeholders within ecosystems may have conflicting interests, different levels of digital maturity, or competing commercial incentives.
Moving from today’s linear business models toward circular models therefore requires not only technology and regulation, but also careful navigation, governance, and shared strategic direction. Organizations will need to manage this transition in phases, balancing current operational realities with longer-term circular ambitions.
AI and data are becoming the decision infrastructure behind that transition.
A particularly interesting discussion focused on the role AI can play in supporting circular operations in practice. In many industries, organizations still lack complete documentation about the raw materials and components used in products and assets throughout their lifecycle. This becomes a major challenge when products need to be repaired, reused, recycled, or decomposed.
AI can increasingly help identify and classify materials automatically — for example through image recognition, sensor data, pattern analysis, or digital twins — enabling organizations to better recover resources, optimize reuse, and reduce waste. These kinds of capabilities will become essential as circularity moves from policy ambition to operational reality.
Throughout the forum, it became clear that intelligent systems will play a critical role in enabling organizations to make real-time, lifecycle-based decisions across increasingly complex ecosystems. From infrastructure and mobility to logistics and public services, organizations need better ways to anticipate risks, optimize resources, and strengthen resilience.
For me, and specifically within the Resilient Infrastructures domain where we deliver solutions to our customers, these developments are highly relevant.
The clients we work with across infrastructure, mobility, and logistics are increasingly looking for ways to combine resilience, sustainability, operational performance, and digital transformation into one integrated strategy. This is where business consulting, systems thinking and engineering, data platforms, and AI capabilities come together.
The transition toward circular and resilient economies is already underway.
The real question is no longer if this transformation will happen — but how quickly organizations can adapt to the transition ahead and lead within it.
