The Four Evolutions of Commerce

To understand where we are going, we must look at where we’ve been. E-commerce has evolved through four distinct eras:

1. Commerce 1.0 (1995–2007): The Web Era

Human → Website → Purchase Players: Amazon, eBay The mission was simple: Trust. The industry spent a decade convincing humans that entering a credit card number into a browser was safe. The goal was to prove that buying online was possible.

2. Commerce 2.0 (2007–2018): The Mobile Era

Human → Mobile App → Purchase Players: Amazon App, Trendyol, Hepsiburada The screen moved from the desk to the pocket. Friction became the enemy. One-click checkouts and push notifications turned shopping into a 24/7 activity. The goal was accessibility.

3. Commerce 3.0 (2018–2024): The Social Era

Human → Social Media → E-Commerce Players: Instagram Shopping, TikTok Shop Shopping stopped being a destination and became a byproduct of entertainment. Discovery became social. The goal was to close the gap between inspiration and transaction.

4. Commerce 4.0 (2025+): The Agentic Era

Human → AI Agent → Commerce Players: OpenAI, Google, Meta, Shopify, Stripe, Visa, Mastercard We are now entering a world where a software agent acts on behalf of the human. This isn’t just a new feature; it is a new interface for the internet. The goal is delegation.

What is Agentic Commerce?

Agentic Commerce is the model where AI agents handle the discovery, comparison, decision-making, and execution of a purchase based on user intent and predefined policies.

The difference between a Chatbot and an Agent is critical:

  • A chatbot recommends a product.
  • An agent executes a purchase.

An agent understands your budget, your brand preferences, your delivery needs, and your return requirements. It doesn’t just talk about the task; it completes it.

The Protocol Shift: From HTTP to UCP & ACP

Just as the early web was built on HTTP, the new era of autonomous agents requires its own set of rules. We are seeing the birth of new commerce protocols designed for machines to talk to merchants.

Era Core Protocol Primary Function Early Web HTTP Transporting content between browsers and servers. API Economy REST / GraphQL Allowing apps to share data in a structured way. Agentic Era ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol) Standardization of transaction flows between AI agents and payment stacks (OpenAI/Stripe). Agentic Era UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) An open language for discovery and inventory across different agents and platforms (Google/Shopify).

While HTTP remains the fundamental transport layer, ACP and UCP sit on top as the “Commerce Rails,” defining how an agent verifies a price, checks stock, and handles a delegated payment.

The Invisible Checkout

Today, “Checkout” is a UI problem. It’s a series of forms, address fields, and card entries. In the Agentic era, Checkout is an Authorization problem.

When you delegate a task to an agent, you aren’t filling out a form. You are granting a Policy-Controlled Authorization. The agent uses a secure token, verifies the transaction against your limits, and executes it in the background. The “Checkout Page” is becoming an invisible execution layer.

Who Owns the Intent?

The move toward Agentic Commerce has sparked a new arms race among the giants:

  • OpenAI & Google are fighting to own the Intent Layer (where the user asks for what they need).
  • Shopify is building the Merchant Infrastructure to make millions of businesses “agent-ready.”
  • Stripe is designing the Transaction OS for autonomous payments.
  • Visa & Mastercard are reinventing the Trust & Identity Layer to ensure that when an agent pays, the transaction is secure and authorized.

The Final Insight

The first 30 years of e-commerce were about empowering consumers to find exactly what they wanted in a sea of options.

The next 30 years will be about liberating consumers from the burden of choice.

If this shift holds true, Agentic Commerce is not just another step in the evolution of retail — it is the moment e-commerce becomes truly autonomous. The future of competition won’t be about who has the best website; it will be about whose backend is most readable and trustworthy to the agents making the decisions.

Commerce is no longer just for humans. The agents are logging in.
