Quit India Movement

“Do or Die.”

On 8 August 1942, the All India Congress Committee adopted the historic Quit India Resolution in Bombay, giving a decisive call for an end to British colonial rule in India. Mahatma Gandhi urged Indians to launch a determined struggle for freedom with the powerful message: “Do or Die.”

The following day, 9 August 1942, Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and many other national leaders were arrested by the British authorities. Rather than ending the movement, the arrests transformed the struggle into a widespread mass movement.

Students, workers, farmers, women and ordinary citizens participated in protests, strikes, demonstrations and acts of resistance across the country. With much of the established leadership imprisoned, local leaders and ordinary people played an increasingly important role.

Women also made significant contributions. Leaders such as Aruna Asaf Ali, Sucheta Kriplani and Usha Mehta became important figures in the underground phase of the movement. Usha Mehta’s secret Congress Radio helped circulate news and messages when British censorship restricted communication.

The Quit India Movement faced severe repression. Thousands of people were arrested, demonstrations were suppressed, and the colonial government used considerable force to maintain control. Yet the movement demonstrated the depth and breadth of India’s demand for independence.

Although independence did not come immediately after the movement, Quit India became a decisive chapter in India’s freedom struggle. It showed that the demand for independence had become a mass national aspiration that could no longer be ignored.

Why Quit India Movement Matters

The movement reminds us that India’s freedom was the result of the courage, sacrifice and participation of countless people — not only famous political leaders. It was a moment when ordinary Indians stepped forward and accepted extraordinary risks for the cause of freedom.

On Quit India Movement Day, we remember those who participated in the struggle and reflect on the values associated with India’s freedom movement: courage, unity, sacrifice, democratic aspirations and the determination to shape our own future.

Remember the struggle. Honour the sacrifices. Value freedom.
