A Four-Part Framework to Accelerate the Financial Close
There is significant strategic value in a highly effective financial close process.
When the close is both accurate and timely, leadership teams can trust the numbers, identify trends earlier, make adjustments faster, and seed forecasts and planning models with far greater confidence.
What I’ve found over the years is that the underlying challenge differs substantially between enterprise and mid-market organizations.
In large enterprises, especially public companies, the issue is rarely accounting quality. SEC reporting requirements, audits, controls, and sophisticated stakeholders create strong financial discipline. The challenge is speed. On several transformation programs, I’ve helped organizations significantly accelerate the close process without sacrificing quality, including one Fortune 500 company that reduced close and consolidation cycle time by 57% using a structured four-part transformation framework.
Because of that, I often view close cycle time in large organizations as a high-level indicator of the overall effectiveness of finance operations and accounting processes.
In the mid-market, the dynamic is different. The challenge is often process quality and consistency. Without the same reporting pressures, audit rigor, or depth of technical accounting resources, finance teams frequently rely on one-off calculations, plug entries, and “book-to-budget” accrual practices that are quick and easy, but not accurate.
For those organizations, the value driver is improving the quality and reliability of the financials — not just speed.
The strongest finance organizations achieve both: speed and trust in the numbers. That combination gives leadership teams a meaningful operational advantage.
I was recently quoted in ***CFO Drive* on this topic, including the four-part framework I’ve used to accelerate and strengthen close processes across organizations. Check out my four-part framework [here](https://cfodrive.com/qa/cut-days-from-the-monthly-close-without-losing-accuracy/)**.
