Scientists in Kaliningrad have discovered how an ancient ant found in amber died

This year, the Kaliningrad Regional Amber Museum received a small piece of amber containing inclusions — the remains of an ant. The specimen was examined there, and researchers were able to determine how the ancient insect died.
“Based on the preserved parts, it was possible to identify the ant’s genus — Lasius,” said Andronik Manukyan, senior research associate at the museum.
According to the scientists, this scene is likely the result of a spider’s feast. The spider divided its prey: first it ate the more nutritious head, then the carbohydrate-rich abdomen. Afterwards, the remains were covered by a flow of resin.
The piece of amber with inclusions will continue to be studied. Later, it may be displayed to visitors as part of the museum exhibition.
