Do We Have Free Will?

Perhaps destiny sets the stage — but we decide how the story feels

Most people, when they begin to explore spirituality, start with the familiar themes: living in the present moment, thinking positively, manifesting the good things life has to offer.

I read The Secret, The Power of Now, and The Untethered Soul. They were inspiring, comforting even. But one question kept following me like a quiet shadow:

Do we really have free will?

At that time, I was sick with cancer. And the idea of predetermination felt unbearable. I needed hope. I needed to believe that I was not just a character in someone else’s script — not God’s, not the Universe’s.

I wanted to feel that my choices mattered.

After I recovered, the question didn’t disappear. If anything, it became deeper.

So let’s look at it from a spiritual perspective. I’ll offer you a short version and a longer one. Which one feels true to you is entirely your choice.

The Short Version

Yes, we have free will

It’s actually the whole point of us being here on Earth. We are here to discover how life works in a physical world and to learn how to make our own decisions without constant guidance from our Higher Self.

The Longer Version: The “Probability Corridor”

To understand the longer explanation, I need to introduce what I call the theory of the “probability corridor.”

When we begin a new life, some key points along our path may already be set. For example, we might marry a certain person. We might leave the country we were born in. There can be important milestones that are preplanned.

But the rest of our life unfolds freely — as long as we stay within what I call the probability corridor.

We don’t have an infinite number of choices in one lifetime. The number of probabilities is limited.

For instance, if becoming famous and wealthy is not within our corridor, it may simply never happen — no matter how hard we try. If we are meant to live a long life, we will. Whether we live to 80 or 90 might depend on our habits and health, but our life probably won’t be cut dramatically short.

So yes, we choose freely — but within certain boundaries.

Some events might happen regardless of what we do because they were planned by our Higher Self as mandatory experiences. Often there may be two or three key turning points that cannot be negotiated. Everything else remains flexible, as long as we stay within the corridor.

Can we leave the corridor? Maybe we can try. But in most cases, it won’t work.

My cancer was one of those key moments I couldn’t avoid. That was part of my path. And I also recovered — because I was not meant to die young.

We move through life inside this tunnel of probabilities. Within it, our will is real. We decide whether to study or travel, to stay or to leave, to hold on or to let go — as long as those choices exist within our corridor.

So do we have free will?

I believe we do.

But there may be parts of our lives that we cannot change.
