Note 20 from My Daughter’s Chinese-speaking Mission in Vancouver: 悲慘世界 Les Misérables

Transfers! I stayed in White Rock and Sister H. moved here with me! The English-speaking sister missionaries that we lived with last transfer moved out, and so did my dear trainer, the original Sister H. Tons of big changes, but this transfer is going to be awesome!

Me and my new companion, Sister H. taught a lesson on the Plan of Salvation and explained the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ 摩尔门经：耶稣基督的另一部约 (Mó’ěr mén jīng: Yēsū jīdū de lìng yī bù yuē) to a family in Mandarin! I don’t even know how we did it, the Spirit of God guided us so much. (Both of us had very little mandarin experience before the mission, and have only been out for a few months!)

We had an English lesson and tried to invite our friend to church and we did not understand what she was talking about and then she used Google translate and it turns out she was talking about Les Misérables? Like the play? Ha — ha!

Two times this week random vocab that I learned from DuoLingo was super useful, most of the time it’s not very helpful, but somehow it was super needed this week!

We had a lesson with our friend, Mr. A! He is so sweet and has such a strong desire to share God’s love for all his children with everyone he knows!

Me and Sister H. translated a speaker’s 5-minute address or talk from church from English to Chinese! (It’s at the end of this post, check it out!)

It was absolutely pouring 2 days this week, and we decided that those days we would walk everywhere, actually so fun!

We got hot taro lattes because we were really cold and really wet, and they’re actually the best thing ever!! I don’t know how I’ve never had them before ha, ha!

White Rock Chinese group has a group leader! Brother L. was called and sustained on Sunday! It’s been hard for the bishop to find someone who can be the leader so it’s super exciting we have one!

Jesus loves you all so much! He wants to talk to you and help you! I hope you all have awesome weeks!

Good morning, Brothers and Sisters, It’s a joy to be here with you today as we come together to worship our Savior, Jesus Christ. For those who may be unfamiliar, the “Come, Follow Me” program is a home-centered, church-supported approach to scripture study. It encourages us to deepen our understanding of the gospel, strengthen our relationships through shared study and discussions, and apply the teachings of Jesus Christ in our everyday lives to foster spiritual growth. This year, we’ve been studying the Book of Mormon, and this past week, we focused on the remarkable moments when Jesus Christ visited the people in the Americas after His resurrection. I’d like to share a personal insight I gained from this reading. When Christ visited the people in the Americas, He taught the same gospel that He had shared with those in Jerusalem, emphasizing the importance of making covenants through baptism. As I studied, one particular detail stood out to me — something I hadn’t noticed before. On the first day, Jesus asked His disciples to bring bread and wine for the sacrament. Yet, on the second day, there’s a verse that says, “now there had been no bread, neither wine, brought by the disciples, neither by the multitude.”. On the second occasion, Jesus provided the bread and wine. As I pondered why this distinction was included, I realized that sometimes, the Lord asks us to make an effort, to bring what we can (in this case, the bread and water for the sacrament). At other times, He provides for us. This insight reminded me that the Lord knows what we need and that He is always there, whether requiring something of us or offering His provision. For some of you here today, God has provided this Chinese group so that you might be strengthened in your knowledge of the gospel and deepen your personal relationship with the Savior. For others, God may be asking you to support our Chinese brothers and sisters who don’t speak English, to help them feel integrated into our community of members. Your presence and support can bless the lives of others.
