Growing Into the Name Bernard Michael Rochford

When I was younger, the name Bernard Michael Rochford felt… well, a bit much.

It sounded like someone who owned a castle in Scotland or published papers on Renaissance philosophy. Definitely not someone elbow-deep in fascia, adjusting hips and listening to patients in suburban Brisbane.

But now, in my sixties — with a silver beard, a slower pace, and a surprisingly strong passion for marmalade — I finally feel like I’ve grown into it. I am, without doubt, Bernard Michael Rochford.

For years, I was simply “Bernie the Osteo.” Patients would call out, “Hey Bernie!” across Queen Street Mall or in the Woolies car park. The familiarity always warmed me. But privately, I’d chuckle at how my full name — Bernard Michael Rochford — was reserved only for paperwork and bank accounts.

Since retiring from osteopathy, I’ve had more time to think about names. What they mean. How they shape us. How we grow into them — or away from them. And for me, retirement didn’t just mean the end of a career. It was a reintroduction to the man behind the name.

Without the clinic, without the white coat, who was Bernard Michael Rochford?

Turns out, he’s someone who enjoys long walks by the Brisbane River. Someone who gets excited about seed catalogs. Someone who writes half-decent short stories and drinks too much Earl Grey. Someone who — oddly enough — loves his full name now.

Bernard Michael Rochford is no longer just the name at the bottom of a Medicare receipt. It’s me. It’s the version of me that’s softer, slower, and somehow more real.

I still talk to patients — former ones, that is. They call, email, or bump into me at the bakery. We reminisce. Some ask for posture tips, others just want to share a story. And I love it. Being Bernard Michael Rochford, even in retirement, still means being part of a healing story.

I’m also writing more. Nothing flashy. Just personal reflections — like this one. A few local papers have published my pieces, and while I’d never call myself a writer, I do enjoy the rhythm of language. There’s something nice about crafting a sentence rather than treating a spine.

My wife jokes that I should’ve started blogging years ago. “You always had stories, Bernie,” she says. “Now you finally have time to tell them.”

So here I am. Telling them. Under my full name. Loud and proud.

Because in this slower chapter of life, I’ve learned something simple but powerful:

There’s no rush to figure it all out. Sometimes, you grow into your name — just like you grow into yourself.

So if you’re wondering what happened to that Brisbane osteopath named Bernard Michael Rochford, now you know: he’s still here. Still listening. Still learning. Just with a bit more grey and a lot more tea.

Until next time, Bernard Michael Rochford
