Building an AHB-Lite to APB Bridge: My Journey

First of all, welcome to my very first blog. If you’ve somehow stumbled upon this article, thank you for stopping by. I’m Sanjay, an Electronics Engineering student with a deep interest in VLSI, RTL design, and more recently, AI hardware architecture. Most of my days are usually spent exploring digital design, discussing computer architecture, or accidentally falling into rabbit holes that I probably underestimated.

And speaking of underestimating things, that’s exactly how this project began.

To be completely honest, I had absolutely no clue what I had signed myself up for.

There was no grand master plan. No “I’ve always dreamed of building an AHB-Lite to APB Bridge” moment. In fact, this project started because AI randomly suggested it to me while I was looking for RTL projects.

Naturally, I looked at the suggestion and thought:

“An AHB-Lite to APB Bridge? Sounds interesting. How hard could it possibly be?”

Famous last words.

So naturally, after enthusiastically deciding to build this bridge, the next question was:

“Okay… where do I even begin?”

Or more importantly,

“What in the world is AHB?”

And for that matter…

“What even is APB?”

Now, I could have simply asked AI to explain everything to me and happily accepted whatever answer it gave. But I wanted to experience engineering the way people probably did in the early 2000s.

No spoon-feeding.

No magical prompts.

Just me, Google, and a healthy amount of optimism.

So I did what any curious engineer would do.

I Googled.

I typed:

“AHB protocol”

The first result that popped up was from ARM itself.

Perfect.

“Surely this should explain everything,” I thought.

I clicked on the link expecting to find a nice, simple explanation of AHB.

Instead, I was greeted by a word that I had never seen before.

AMBA.

At this point, I had absolutely no clue what in the world AMBA was.

I started by trying to understand AHB.

Then I discovered APB.

And now there was apparently something called AMBA involved.

Wonderful.

It felt like I had opened one door, only to discover three more doors behind it.

Naturally, my curiosity shifted.

Forget AHB for a moment.

What in the world was AMBA?

At first, I thought AMBA was probably some protocol that I had somehow never heard of.

Turns out, I was wrong.

AMBA, which stands for Advanced Microcontroller Bus Architecture, isn’t a protocol itself. Instead, it is a family of protocols developed by ARM for communication inside a System-on-Chip (SoC).

And honestly, this was my first “Ahhh…” moment.

Because suddenly, things started making sense.

It was like discovering that AHB and APB weren’t random inventions floating around in space. They belonged to a larger family.

Think of AMBA as a parent, and protocols like AHB and APB as some of its children.

And just like any family, each member had its own personality and purpose.

At this point, I was beginning to realize that I wasn’t merely building “some bridge.”

I was about to explore how different parts of an SoC communicate with each other.

And honestly, that sounded much cooler than I had originally anticipated.

Of course, this immediately raised another question in my mind.

If AMBA is the family…

Then where exactly do AHB and APB fit into this picture?

And after some more digging, I have now stumbled upon the protocol specifications for both AHB-Lite and APB.

Excellent.

At this point, I am feeling both excited and slightly terrified.

Because I have just downloaded documents written by people who are clearly much smarter than me, and I have absolutely no idea what treasures — or horrors — lie within them.

For all I know, these documents might contain the secrets of the universe.

Or they might simply confuse me beyond repair.

Only one way to find out.

So, armed with curiosity, a cup of coffee, and perhaps an unreasonable amount of optimism, I am now embarking upon the noble quest of understanding these specifications.

Will I understand everything immediately?

Almost certainly not.

Will I become confused?

Highly likely.

Will I question my life choices somewhere along the way?

I wouldn’t rule it out.

But that’s part of the fun of engineering, isn’t it?

So, dear reader, I shall now disappear into the world of AHB-Lite and APB specifications.

And I promise to return once I have survived my encounter with these mysterious documents and hopefully emerged a slightly wiser engineer.
