Hopscotch 2017 Day 3: The Pour House— Raleigh, NC — 9/7/2017

Day three of Hopscotch brought us back to The Pour House for a night of punk rock at its finest. Raleigh’s punk scene was alive as fans arrived early to get a spot and catch every minute of the night’s events.

Raleigh’s own Pie Face Girls [★★★★★] kicked off the evening with an energetic set full of multi-tempo songs. Dani (vocals and guitar), Tiffany (bass), and Klay (drums) meld a sound of 80’s and modern punk. The trio are have fun which is evident with the witty stage banter and interaction with the crowd. While Dani handles a majority of the vocals, they all do a great job of taking on vocal responsibilities. A punk show wouldn’t be complete without some slam dancing and “Get On The Floor” gave the fans the right motivation to mix it up. Other favorites included “Tinder,” “Street Creep,” and their closing song “Fuck You I’m Pretty.”

One of the big surprises of the evening was touring act The Coke Dares [★★★★★]. These three gents from Bloomington, IN bring an old school punk rock approach with a blazing set list of over thirty songs. They have a comic approach to their songs and the banter between songs is like a show within the show. The set is evenly balanced with all three sharing vocal duties as they ripped through fan favorites “There’s Meth Lab On My Street,” “Stuff,” and “You Say A Lot.” The trio even had enough time to include a couple of cover tunes like ZZ Top’s “Cheap Sunglasses” and Steely Dan’s “Reeling In The Years.” If you are in the mood for for some old school punk and a good time, check these guys out.

The highly anticipated Richard Lloyd [★★★★] took the stage next. Known for his work with ‘70s band Television, Lloyd has a new group with Terry Clouse (bass), Jeff Brakebill (drums), and Jason NeSmith (guitar with sonic vision to boot). His avant-garde approach to crafting music brings new riff-powered pop songs backed by a solid band. “The Word” brought a guitar hero feel and pop song flair while early solo career “Field of Fire” lies in the pop territory. The group also peppered a few Television songs such as “Friction,” “Marquee Moon,” and “Elevation.” Lloyd is in part a living legend and it’s great to be able to catch this artist in such an intimate setting.

Closing out the night was the crowd favorite Cherry Glazerr [★★★★★]. The Los Angeles rock outfit fronted by Clementine Creevy have come a long way since Haxel Princess and have amassed a large following. With a packed house of beer-swigging fans, they tore into “Sip ‘O Poison” and fans lost their minds. Creevy’s takes on an alter ego and goes from bouncing with joy to piercing stares that border on distant and disturbed. They continued to churn out songs at brisk pace touching on all of the fan favorites like “Had $10,” “Nurse Ratched,” and “Told You I’d Be With The Boys.” As all good things must come to an end, they closed with an encore “White’s Not My Color This Evening” leaving fans beyond satisfied with their filling of Cherry Glazerr.

Day three is now in the books as a fun-filled evening of punk rock that spanned generations. From legends to the new generation of players, there was something for everyone and goes to show that punk is not dead.
