The Dialectic Dialogues

The Faustian Bargain of the New Sharecroppers

Thesis: America is a nation of immigrants, a melting pot where anyone can come, work hard, and achieve the dream.

Antithesis: America is a plantation with a revolving door. It does not accept immigrants; it consumes them. And the price of admission for the non-white arrival is a Faustian Bargain: sell your soul, erase your history, and learn to hate the native-born ADOS/Black population you are being used to replace. You are not a pioneer. You are the new sharecropper.

The Dialogue:

Richard Pryor wasn’t just telling a joke. He was performing an autopsy on the American soul. He revealed the first and most important sacrament in the church of whiteness: the ritual denigration of the ADOS.

Pryor spit: The immigrant gets off the plane, eyes wide with the promise. And the system, with its invisible hand, immediately places a tool in theirs. The tool is the word. The word is “Nigger.” To say it is to swear allegiance. To wield it is to prove you understand the primary rule of the American game: your value is not in who you are, but in who you are not. Your path to not-other is paved over blood drenched soil, and our unmarked graves.

This is not integration. It is conversion. A forced or willing baptism in the toxic waters of white supremacy and the unholy grail of proximity to whiteness.

Your self-identity — your Chinese heritage, your Nigerian pride, your Somalia pride, your Indian history, your otherness than white — must be checked at the gate like excess baggage. In its place, you are handed a proxy identity: the “non-Black minority.” You are not being welcomed as yourself. You are being recruited as fodder. Political fodder. Economic fodder. Social fodder.

You are the transient paper tiger for “whiteness as property.” And a dispensable shield.

The system, terrified of the foundational claim and moral authority of the ADOS — the people it built itself upon — needs a buffer. It needs a demographic shock absorber. It needs you to stand between it and the people it owes everything to and nothing but death.

So it offers you the Faustian Bargain.

But understand the precise, historical nature of your role. You are not merely fodder. You are the new sharecropper on the American plantation.

Consider the original sharecropper, post-Emancipation: “You are free from the chain, but you may stay on the land. Work this plot. The yield will be almost yours. But the seed, the tool, the store are mine. You will remain in perpetual debt to me. You will work yourself to exhaustion on soil you can never own, for a freedom that is a ledger entry in my book.”

This is your bargain:

You get: The illusion of being a stakeholder. The right to cultivate a small plot in the American dream — a business, a career, a home. The “model minority” myth is your company store, offering credit against your future.

You give: Your memory. Your solidarity. Your soul. You must ignore the blood in the soil you now tread. You must adopt the American amnesia, which is specifically an amnesia about us. You are in perpetual cultural debt, paying installments by maligning the ADOS, the very people whose uncompensated labor cleared the field you now think you’re tending.

You become a Pavlovian dog, salivating at the bell of “opportunity,” never questioning who owns the land, who holds the deed, and who is the soil that was exhausted before you arrived.

And here is the cruelest trick of the sharecropper’s life: The system is designed to keep you in debt. True ownership — of power, of narrative, of belonging — is as elusive for you as it was for the Black farmer tied to the plantation store. The deed to “whiteness as property” has no co-signers. It is non-transferable. You were never meant to own. You were only ever meant to rent a plot, and to guard the master’s house. As Paul Mooney truthfully joked, ‘You will get your wake up call.’

Proximity to whiteness will not save you.

So where does this leave us, the ADOS?

It leaves us with a stark, non-negotiable truth: Our liberation cannot be leased, sharecropped, or outsourced.

We are not fellow sharecroppers. We are the land itself. Our bodies, our history, our culture are the plantation — the asset that has been fought over, divided, rented out, and depleted. Our 400+ years of honed insight is the deep knowledge of the soil. We know its scars, its toxins, and its dormant, un-killable strength. And more importantly, we know of, survived, and thrived — overarching vampiric whiteness.

Think, as ADOS, 400+ years living in a predominately-white-country.

The ADOS know white people, better than white people know themselves. We see you.

“I can’t believe what you say, because I see what you do.” — James Baldwin

No immigrant group, no proxy, no sharecropper will dismantle the system that requires their own self-erasure to function. Our fight is singular. It is ours. It is the fight to nullify the deed and reclaim the title to our own being- our sovereign self.

The Faustian bargain always ends. The devil always collects. The sharecropper’s debt comes due. And when it does, they will look around for the people who know the land, realizing finally this land isn’t just a plot to be worked, but a home to be liberated.

We will be here.

Remembering and knowing and …

building a world where no soul is the price of a dream.
