Sometimes, the safest place was not where love began ,but where someone quietly caught you when you broke apart.
Some wounds are not caused by betrayal. They come from the moment you realize how someone truly sees you.
Guests gradually drifted away. I started clearing the table. Daniel caught my hand.
“Leave it. Come with me.”
His room was small, clean but not particularly tidy. The moment I stepped inside, I caught a scent that belonged only to him.
I remembered the gift box in my bag and handed it to him.
“Happy birthday.”
He opened it curiously. A bottle of cologne. He smelled it, then looked at me in surprise.
“How did you know I like this scent?”
I smiled. “I guessed right, then. Whenever you held me before, I could smell it on you. Subtle, but very masculine. I went through almost every cologne at the store before I found the same one.”
He pulled me into his arms.
“You’re so thoughtful, Lily.”
He pressed my face against his chest. His jacket was already off, his shirt partly open. His voice softened.
“You really like this scent on me, don’t you?”
I nodded.
His fingers moved through my hair, then rested on my shoulder.
“It suddenly feels warm in here.”
He slipped my shawl off slowly.
“You look beautiful in that dress, Lily. Your shoulders are perfect.”
He guided me toward the bed, tilted my chin up, and kissed me. I wrapped my arms around him. With one gentle movement, we fell onto the bed together.
Unlike that night at Niagara Falls, he was no longer impulsive. He was careful, tender, almost restrained. Bit by bit, I relaxed.
I felt dizzy and lost in his warmth, his scent, the softness of his lips. His hands removed his clothes, then mine, while his mouth never left me.
When our bodies pressed together, Andrew’s face flashed through my mind.
But I had already decided to accept Daniel honestly. If he whispered, I love you. I want you, I would give him my whole life.
Perhaps he sensed my hesitation. He leaned close to my ear.
“Don’t be nervous. Relax. It’s not your first time.”
The words struck me like lightning.
A sharp pain tore through my chest.
The moment he said it, he knew he had made a mistake.
I pushed him away easily.
He grabbed my arm. “I’m sorry, Lily. I didn’t mean it that way. I don’t look down on you. I just wanted you to relax.”
I interrupted him quietly.
“But deep down, you still think about it. Whether you mean to or not, it will always be there.”
I dressed quickly, barely straightening my clothes.
At the door, I turned back. Daniel sat curled on the bed, head in his hands.
I wandered the streets without knowing where I was going.
Only one voice kept repeating inside me.
Lily. Go home.
Before I realized it, I was standing in front of Andrew’s house.
One look at my face, and he pulled me inside. He seemed to understand everything.
“Give me Daniel’s address.”
I shook my head weakly. “Don’t go. He didn’t do anything to me.”
I looked up at him. “I just want to go home.”
Tears burst out. I fell into his arms.
Andrew held me tight, patting my back gently.
“Your home is here. No one will hurt you. I’ll protect you.”
He lifted my face and wiped my tears away with his broad hand.
“I won’t let you cry again.”
Back at school, Daniel and I became strangers.
I avoided being in the same groups. When classmates asked, I stayed silent. He brushed it off.
“It’s nothing. We just had a disagreement.”
One day, he stopped me outside the classroom.
“Lily, are we really going to be enemies forever? I don’t always express myself well, but I love you. Can’t you give me another chance?”
I looked at him calmly. “Sometimes, people don’t even understand their own hearts.”
I walked away without looking back.
I never held grudges. We still shared the same classroom, after all. We couldn’t stay cold forever.
But that old ease between us never returned.
In the months before graduation, I threw myself into my studies.
Every weekend, I still went to my brother’s house. I stayed in my room reading.
Andrew told funny stories at dinner. I forced myself to smile.
Sometimes, while I read, he would quietly bring me fruit.
And somewhere between turning pages and taking small bites, my eyes would slowly fill with tears.
Sometimes, love does not end with hatred. It ends with silence, regret, and the painful understanding that tenderness alone is not always enough.
And sometimes, home is simply the place where someone still reaches for you after you fall.
