Oh! This is Good: “Stay With Me” by Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀. The Debut That Made the Whole World Lean In.

There are books you read, and there are books that read you. Settle onto your perch with something warm, because today I’m telling you about a debut novel that arrived in 2017 and promptly collected award shortlists the way the rest of us collect unread paperbacks.

Stay With Me opens in Ilesa, Nigeria, in the politically turbulent 1980s. Yejide and Akin met at university and married for love. They agreed, firmly, that theirs would never be a polygamous home. But four years pass without a child, and in their world, a marriage without children is a house everyone feels entitled to renovate. The pressure builds until one afternoon Akin’s family arrives at the door with a young woman named Funmi. A second wife. Chosen without Yejide’s knowledge. Presented with smiles.

What Yejide does next, and what Akin has already done, I will not tell you. Because the great engine of this novel is revelation. Husband and wife narrate in alternating chapters, and both are concealing things so enormous that when they surface, the entire story rearranges itself behind you. I gasped audibly at least twice, once on a bus, and I regret nothing. Hope and deceit, grief and forgiveness, desire and duty: Adébáyọ̀ braids them all with a control that seasoned novelists spend decades chasing. She wrote it in her twenties.

The world’s response was immediate. The novel was shortlisted for the 2017 Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction, the only debut to make the list. It was shortlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize, which honours writing that illuminates health and medicine, fitting for a book that handles sickle cell disease with such rare tenderness and truth. It won the 9mobile Prize for Literature. It was longlisted for the International Dylan Thomas Prize and the International Dublin Literary Award. The Guardian, the Economist, the Wall Street Journal, NPR and the Chicago Tribune all named it a best book of the year. It has travelled into twenty languages and twenty-four countries.

And then there are the individual voices. Margaret Atwood, not a woman given to idle praise, called it scorching, gripping, ultimately lovely. And in one of my favourite pieces of book-world trivia, Michiko Kakutani, the most feared and revered critic in America, chose this novel as her final review before stepping down as the New York Times’ chief book critic, calling Adébáyọ̀ an exceptional storyteller. Imagine ending a legendary career on a debut. That’s how good it is.

A word of honest preparation, as ever. This is not a gentle read. It moves through infertility, loss, illness and betrayal without flinching, and some critics felt the tragedies gather almost operatically. I’d counter that the accumulation is the point: Adébáyọ̀ is showing what a person can survive, and what surviving costs. But bring your whole heart and maybe a free evening afterwards to sit quietly.

Why does it make such a perfect HootPerch read? Because this is a novel built on withheld information.
