He is one of the Sesame Street characters who is known for his high-pitched falsetto voice and the way he talks about himself (which is in the 3rd person, meant to reflect a typical preschooler’s speaking patterns). He’s known for teaching children basic academics such as vocabulary, ABCs, and 123s, as well as values that are important for preschoolers to learn and model, such as kindness, empathy, etc. Elmo also teaches them how to share and control negative emotions. However, there’s one video of Elmo which is very funny and popular among viewers. It’s the “Rocco is just a rock” video.

What is the “Rocco is just a rock” Video?

The “Rocco is just a rock” Sesame Street video is a video featuring Elmo and his friend Zoe. Elmo is frustrated with Zoe persistently insisting that Rocco, her pet rock, is alive and deserves to be treated like a living organism. Here’s the detailed dialogue from the video:

The video’s initial popularity on platforms such as Twitter and TikTok quickly led to its viral spread.

Comparison With Fake Elmo Videos (e.g. Britman Speaks)

Elmo is not always happy. Of course not, because he’s not a robot and is meant to reflect a 3.5-year-old’s experiences. And the “Rocco is just a rock” video shows that. However, the way Elmo is expressing his frustration in the video is very different from parodies such as Britman Speaks, which I discussed in my previous article about Sesame Street and Elmo. Here’s why:

1. Elmo is NOT swearing or being mean to Zoe. He is simply just expressing his confusion about her decision to feed Rocco a cookie. This is typical preschooler behavior as they are learning to separate imagination from reality.
2. Elmo is not physically aggressing Zoe or asking anyone if he can do so, unlike what the Britman Speaks videos depict him doing.
3. Elmo is not in any kind of adult setting unlike many videos by Britman Speaks.

While Elmo is angry, the key takeaway is that he’s not being rude, mean, or aggressive towards Zoe in the “Rocco is just a rock” video.

What Does it Teach Kids?

Excellent question. And a really important one.

The video isn’t just funny; it can indirectly teach various key things preschool-aged children need to know. Here are some of them:

1. Imagination and pretend play: Zoe’s attachment to her pet rock, Rocco, and her insisting that he has feelings and needs, encourages children to embrace their own imaginations and pretend play, effectively emphasizing the importance of creativity.

5. Reality vs. fantasy: Zoe may imagine herself giving Rocco a cookie, but he definitely cannot eat it because he’s a rock, which isn’t a living organism, right? So it’s just her imagination at work, and giving rocks cookies is not reality. It’s fantasy.

However, although it may be funny on a literal level, its deeper meaning is significant for preschoolers, teaching them the importance of creativity and imagination, emotional regulation, and being able to identify reality and fantasy.
