Why You Should Read?

The world is full of content, but I think one of the best forms of it are books. Books are truly beautiful. They not only educate us, they all also teach us to love. Some of you here must have at least once lost themselves ina book, perhaps in a foreign world, perhaps somewhere else. i know I did, and it is the best experience I’ve ever had.

I don’t want to blabber much, but I am here to present to you the reason you should read, and I hope that if this helps to get at least one person into reading, it will be enough for me. Please follow my blog and add your reactions in the comments so that I will know what you think about my post. Continue to read.

First, what happens in your brain when you read. I won’t use any fancy terms since I myself am not smart enough to know them. But I hope this tells you what is going through your brain when you read.

Visual Cortex - The Visual cortex is a part of your brain that helps you take in letters as visual patterns, sending signals to your brain.

Letter & Word Recognition: The visual cortex sends info to the temporal lobe (the “letter box”), recognizing shapes as letters, then combining them into words.

Meaning and Sound - The information moves to the frontal lobe ( language center) so that the words that you take in can be processed so that you understand the meaning of the word and also the pronunciation, linking to previously stored knowledge. This is how you can understand what a hot dog looks like and how you pronounce it when you read about one, and aren’t you hoping for that.

Comprehension - The processed information is then integrated with previous knowledge by the brain with the help of the prefrontal cortex, so that you can assosicate it with other things for easier understanding.

Emotional Connection: The limbic system activates, connecting the story to feelings and experiences.

Now that we’ve heard in detail about the different parts of the brain that we use when we read, it is only appropriate that we understand the benefits of reading. They are numerous, but I will be covering just a few in this article.

The different parts of the brain are activated when you read, and they all perform in perfect harmony. Now that deserves a round of applause, don’t you think. This strengthens connections between brain areas and also improves language and reasoning.

It also really helps with your memory, since you often have to recall words, or information within the book, and that is a really useful skill. Don’t thank but thank the book when you actually remember what your history teacher told you next time you have a test.

Books also help improve concentration and attention span, which has honestly deteriorated a lot in 2025. Scrolling through shorts and reels, which are really short as the name suggests, reduces your attention span by a lot.

Skilled readers form predictions, engaging with the text, which significantly imrpoves understanding.

Books are beautiful, as I wanted to say. For me, I have always loved books, and they have helped me the most in my life. I hope I was able to inspire you to also bathe in the magnificence of reading, and also reap it’s benefits.

A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one” - George RR Martin.
