Trump is Purging The Republicans

This is not good..

Trump just went 100% in Republican primaries.

Every candidate he endorsed won.

Bill Cassidy — gone. Thomas Massie — gone. John Cornyn — gone.

The White House communications director posted online — “Do not ever doubt President Trump and his political power. F around, find out.”

And they’re right to celebrate. For now.

What the purge actually looked like

Indiana — five Republican state senators who opposed Trump’s congressional redistricting push. All five unseated by Trump-backed challengers.

Louisiana — Bill Cassidy, senator since 2015, former chair of the Senate Health Committee. Voted to convict Trump after January 6th. Called for Trump to drop out in 2023. Finished third in his own primary.

Kentucky — Thomas Massie, seven-term congressman, libertarian-minded, constantly at odds with Trump. Voted against the tax cuts bill. Opposed the Iran and Venezuela military actions. Was leading the push to release the Epstein files. Lost to a Trump-endorsed former Navy SEAL in the most expensive House primary in American history — $35 million spent.

Texas — John Cornyn, four-term incumbent senator who voted with Trump over 99% of the time, proposed renaming a highway after Trump, did everything short of tattooing the man’s face on his chest. Lost to Ken Paxton by 28 points in the most expensive Senate primary in US history — $130 million in ads alone.

Why Trump did this

Cornyn said in 2023 that Trump’s time had passed. He didn’t endorse him quickly enough in 2024.

That’s the entire offense. A mild criticism years ago and a slow endorsement.

The standard for survival in Trump’s Republican party is now total loyalty at all times with zero hesitation. Cornyn got 99% of the votes right. The 1% cost him his Senate seat.

Why the celebration might be premature

Three problems.

Electability.

Trump has a strong record in primaries. His general election endorsement record is shakier.

2022 midterms — Kari Lake lost in Arizona. Blake Masters lost in Arizona. Doug Mastriano lost in Pennsylvania. High-profile MAGA candidates who won primaries and then lost general elections in winnable states.

Ken Paxton is a 2020 election denier. He has a fraud indictment. He was impeached for bribery. He went through an acrimonious public divorce. He is exactly the kind of candidate who fires up the MAGA base and alienates everyone else.

Several polling aggregators already have the Democratic nominee James Talarico ahead of Paxton. Texas — a state Trump won by 14 points — is now a competitive Senate race. Even if Paxton wins it will drain money from other crucial races.

The YOLO caucus.

Cassidy, Cornyn, and Massie all still have their seats until January 2027.

They just lost their primaries. They have nothing left to lose. No electoral pressure. No reason to stay loyal.

This small but growing group of outgoing Republicans — including voluntary retirees — has been dubbed the YOLO caucus. They have several months left to vote however they want on Trump’s legislative priorities.

Days after losing his primary Cassidy immediately voted with Democrats to restrain US military action in Iran.

Giving longtime Republicans a grudge and no consequences for using it is not obviously a smart move.

Long-term survivability.

Trump’s approval is approaching 60% disapproval. His base is fierce but shrinking.

As long as that base controls Republican primaries the party will keep nominating Trump loyalists. Which means the party keeps being defined by a historically unpopular lame duck president heading into midterms where Democrats already hold a significant polling lead.

Winning the primary by purging moderates and then losing the general is exactly what happened in 2022. The structural conditions for it happening again in 2026 are arguably stronger.

The actual tension

The purge demonstrates real power inside the Republican party.

It may simultaneously be making the Republican party less competitive outside of it.

Trump wins when his base shows up. His base is reliable in primaries. It is not the majority of the electorate in general elections.

Every senator and congressman who gets replaced by a more extreme loyalist is one more data point for independent voters deciding which party looks like a functional governing institution and which one looks like a personality cult.

With Texas suddenly competitive, North Carolina trending Democratic, bond yields at 17-year highs, inflation at 3.8%, and an open-ended war in Iran — the midterm environment is already difficult for Republicans.

Making it harder by purging their most electable incumbents is a choice.

Trump made it. Now everyone waits to see what it costs.
