Render STEP files without UVs like a pro, fast and clean
When a STEP or CAD import has no UVs, texture stretch and torn labels are not shader problems. They are projection problems. Choose the right projection and your product render snaps into place.
Why projection type decides realism in CAD renders
A material can be perfect and still look wrong if its coordinates are wrong. For UV-less STEP and IGES models, the projection is your coordinate system. Pick it with intent.
Quick mental model
- UV mapping = tailored clothing. Precise, repeatable, great for labels and scales. Requires unwrap work.
- Box (cubic) projection = gift wrap. Instant surface coverage from XYZ axes, seams on edges.
- Triplanar projection = airbrush blend. Samples per axis and blends by normal, hides seams, ideal for UV-less parts.
When to use which projection on product models
Use UV mapping when placement must be exact
Logos, rulers, warning decals, barcodes, graduations. If 1 mm matters, unwrap that part.
Tip: lock texel density by mm. px = mm × ppi / 25.4.
Use box projection for speed on blocky parts
Great immediately after CAD import for quick lookdev. Expect visible seams on sharp edges. Keep tiling consistent per part.
Use triplanar for fast, clean stabilization
Best default for UV-less scenes. Blend by surface normal to hide seams. For normal maps, enable re-normalize after axis sampling to prevent highlight wobble.
A practical hybrid workflow for STEP files
- Stabilize the whole assembly with triplanar Set scale by real world units. Start with low tile values.
- Promote critical areas to UVs Only unwrap parts that need precise alignment like labels or measurement rings.
- Align anisotropy for brushed metals Use Object space for projection and align grain to local X or Y. Spin the model 90° to confirm the specular lobe tracks correctly.
- Unify scale across parts Do not apply a single global projection scale. Match texel density by part size or world units.
Common traps and fast fixes
- Edge seams are obvious Increase triplanar blend slightly. Reduce tile density. If still visible, check axis alignment of the texture.
- Brushed grain swims when rotating the model Switch to Object space. Lock anisotropy direction to local axes.
- Tiny screws look over-textured Lower tile on small parts or exclude them from the projection.
- Label change requests explode Keep the body on triplanar. UV only the label mesh as a separate material ID.
- Normal map looks broken Turn on triplanar normal re-normalize. Many engines offer a checkbox or node for this.
