🇮🇳🇰🇷 August 15: A Day of Freedom for India and Korea

There is something beautifully unique about August 15.

For two countries separated by thousands of kilometres, this date carries a powerful meaning: India and South Korea both commemorate freedom on August 15.

🇮🇳 For India, August 15 is Independence Day, marking the country's independence from British rule in 1947. It is a day to remember the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle and to celebrate the freedom that generations fought for.

In Hindi we say

स्वतंत्रता दिवस की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ! Heartfelt wishes on Independence Day!

🇰🇷 For South Korea, August 15 is 광복절 commemorating Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule in 1945. Gwangbok means the “restoration of light ” making the day especially meaningful in Korean history.

In Korean you can say:

광복절을 축하합니다! Happy Liberation Day!

The histories are different, but the emotions are remarkably similar: freedom, remembrance, identity, and hope for the future.

Two nations. Two histories. One date.

Maybe that is what makes August 15 so special. It reminds us that freedom can be remembered in different languages and through different histories, yet its importance is universal.
