There’s a certain kind of excitement that comes with a major Linux distribution update dropping unexpectedly early. KDE Plasma 6.6.4 brings its own round of refinements, paired with KDE Frameworks 6.25.0 and KDE Gear 26.04. One genuinely interesting addition is the new Plasma Login Manager, which is being offered as an optional replacement for SDDM. It feels like a sign of where KDE’s infrastructure is heading.

What Else Landed

The application stack refresh is substantial. Firefox 150, LibreOffice 26.2.3, Mesa 26.0.6, VirtualBox 7.2.8, QEMU 11.0, GStreamer 1.28.2, FFmpeg 8.1, and Heroic Games Launcher 2.21.0 are all part of this wave. ROCm 7.2.2 is also included, which matters if you’re doing any GPU computing on AMD hardware.

Before You Update

Two things deserve your attention before hitting update. First, Pascal and Maxwell NVIDIA GPUs (GTX 10xx and 9xx) are no longer supported by the new driver. Switch to a legacy driver first. Second, Python 3.14 is now the default, meaning AUR packages linking to Python 3.13 libraries will need rebuilding afterward.
