How Doctors Convinced Me My Gut Pain Was “Just in My Head”

When every medical test comes back normal, but you still look 6 months pregnant. The hidden physical link between stress and your stomach.

Let me say this right out of the gate: I am not a doctor, a psychologist, or a medical professional. I am just a regular guy who spent years battling chronic bloating, agonizing stomach cramps, and unpredictable digestion, sharing what finally worked when the medical system gave up on me.

If you have ever sat on that crinkly paper in a cold doctor’s office, practically begging for an answer to your daily stomach pain, only to be told, “Well, your tests are completely normal. Have you tried relaxing? It’s probably just anxiety,” then this is for you.

You are not crazy. The pain is not “all in your head.”

But they were half-right about one thing: it is connected to your brain. Just not in the dismissive way they think.

The Medical Gaslighting

For two years, I bounced from specialist to specialist. I had blood tests, stool tests, and scopes. Every single time, the results came back perfectly fine.

I remember sitting in my car after my third gastroenterologist appointment, holding a pamphlet on “managing stress,” feeling completely defeated. My stomach was so bloated it was physically hard to take a deep breath. I was in sharp, stabbing pain. How could they tell me I was physically fine?

I started to gaslight myself. I thought, Maybe I am just weak. Maybe everyone feels this way and they just handle it better. When doctors can’t find a chemical or structural problem (like an ulcer or a parasite), they default to the “anxiety” bucket. What they fail to explain is the actual, hardwired mechanical biology of how stress shuts down your gut.

The Ghost in the Machine: Your Vagus Nerve

Desperate for answers, I stopped looking at standard gut advice and started looking into neurology. That’s when I discovered the Vagus Nerve.

Think of the Vagus Nerve as a massive, high-speed fiber-optic cable that runs directly from your brain stem all the way down into your stomach and intestines. This nerve controls your parasympathetic nervous system — the mode your body must be in to digest food, commonly called “Rest and Digest.”

Here is the brutal truth: You cannot digest food in a war zone.

When you are stressed, anxious, carrying unhealed trauma, or even just rushing through traffic, your brain triggers your “Fight or Flight” response. When this happens, your body completely shuts off the power to your digestive tract to send blood to your muscles to survive.

Your Vagus Nerve literally flips a switch and says, “Halt the digestion, we are under attack.”

  • The stomach acid stops pumping.
  • The digestive enzymes dry up.
  • The muscles in your intestines stop moving food forward.

The Result is Very Real Physical Pain

So, what happens when you eat a “healthy” meal while your nervous system is stuck in Fight or Flight?

The food just sits there in a paralyzed stomach. Because the mechanical movement has stopped, the food ferments. It creates massive amounts of trapped gas. It stretches your intestines, causing severe, very real physical pain.

The doctors were right that “stress” was involved, but they were entirely wrong to dismiss it as a psychological illusion. It is a severe, physical, mechanical failure of your digestive system.

Flipping the Switch Back

I realized that trying to heal my gut with expensive probiotics or extreme diets was useless if the power to my digestive system was physically switched off.

I had to approach my healing from two angles:

  1. I had to manually turn the Vagus Nerve back on using physical techniques (deep diaphragmatic breathing and physical nerve toning) before I took a single bite of food.
  2. I had to practice “Mechanical Rest.” Since my digestive system was exhausted and constantly shutting down, I stopped feeding it tough, hard-to-digest foods like raw salads. I switched entirely to soft, cooked, mushy foods (like roasted squash, soft rice, and bone broth) that required almost zero effort to digest.

By combining Mechanical Rest with a calm nervous system, the food stopped fermenting. The extreme bloating vanished. The physical pain stopped because my gut finally had the energy and the signals to do its job.

You Need a Break, Not Another Pill

Realizing that my anxiety was causing a mechanical failure in my gut and that I could actually fix it was the most validating moment of my life.

If you are stuck in that awful cycle of stress causing bloating, and the bloating causing more stress, you need to give your body a physical break.

Because I know how overwhelming it is when doctors ignore you, I recently put together a simple, free visual guide. It’s called the “Top 5 Healthy Foods That Are Secretly Bloating You & Safe Swaps.” It shows you exactly what “mechanically restful” foods to eat when your nervous system is fried, and which standard healthy foods are actually making your bloating worse.

I’m leaving the link below. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s just in your head. Your pain is real, and your body just needs the right kind of rest.
