The painting that taught me
I used to think that raising my son Adam was based on a strict system: colors within the frame, toys in their places, and words spoken as they should be spoken. I corrected every little thing, correcting his drawings by erasing the "randomness," and rearranging his life as I liked, believing that perfection was the way. One evening, Adam came home from school carrying a drawing, which he presented to me with eyes sparkling with joy. I looked at the paper and found it a chaotic jumble of colors: tangled lines, endless red and yellow patches, and circles that resembled nothing. I frowned and said, "What is this? Where is the clear drawing?" The little boy smiled and said, "This is our family, Dad. This is you, and this is Mama, and me. We are in the garden. The wind was playing music, and the flowers were laughing, so I made the colors dance." I gazed at the painting again, and I saw what I hadn’t seen the first time: warmth in the yellow, tenderness in the curve of a blue line, and a childlike joy overflowing from every corner. I realized then that I had been trying to mold Adam in my own image, clipping his wings before he could fly. His painting was a mirror to his pure heart, which sees life in chaos and depth in simplicity. I held him close for a long time and whispered, "Teach me how to see the world, for I am the one who needs a lesson." From that day forward, I accompanied him without controlling him, guided him without shackling him, and nurtured his unique seeds instead of planting what wasn’t his. I learned that parenting is not about molding a child into a framework of perfection, but rather the art of listening to the story of his soul, and trusting that if branches are left to the sun and air, they will extend to places where the wisdom of parents does not know.
