In the oral traditions of Benin Kingdom, one name echoes through the centuries: Queen Idia, the Iyoba, the Kingmaker, the most powerful woman in Benin history. Her brilliance is celebrated in statues, in the iconic bronze mask, in stories told across generations.

But there’s another name, spoken less often but no less powerful: Oloi Ohonmi, the sorceress-queen who stood against Idia herself and nearly won.

The Morning That Changed Everything

Morning, late 1400s. In her family’s compound outside Benin City, Oloi Ohonmi gave birth to a son. The midwives prepared to announce the arrival of Oba Ozolua’s newest heir. The baby was enormous, even for a newborn. His size was supernatural.

But he didn’t cry.

Seconds stretched into agonizing minutes. The midwives panicked. Was the child stillborn? Had the spirits claimed him before he could take his first breath? They waited, holding the massive infant, praying for a sign of life.

Meanwhile, that same evening in her own family compound, Oloi Idia gave birth. Her son Osawe cried immediately. Messengers raced to Benin City with the news.

Back in Ohonmi’s hometown, the giant baby finally inhaled. His cry, when it came, shook the walls.

But by then, it was too late.

The announcement of his birth reached the palace hours after his half brother, Esigie. In that silence, in those few precious seconds, Ohonmi’s entire world shifted. Her son Idubor, who would later take the name Arhuanran, would never be king.

And Ohonmi would spend the rest of her life trying to change that.

The Sorceress Queen

Ohonmi wasn’t just a mother. She was a sorceress, a woman of power in her own right. As well as studying palace politics, Ohonmi studied the ancient mystical arts. She learned to create protective amulets. She mastered combat magic. She understood that in Benin Kingdom, power wasn’t just inherited through bloodlines but earned through knowledge.

She watched her son uproot palm trees to intimidate his younger brother Esigie. She saw his rage festering. She knew that when Oba Ozolua died, civil war would come.

And she began to prepare.

Forging an Army

Arhuanran’s supporters weren’t the palace elite. They weren’t trained soldiers or experienced warriors. They were farmers. Blacksmiths. Common people from the town of Udo who believed the giant had been wronged.

Ohonmi looked at these men and saw potential.

She became the Warrior Forger.

She trained farmers to fight like soldiers. She taught them formations, tactics, combat techniques that rivaled the palace guard. She took men who worked the land and forged them into an army capable of challenging the throne itself.

When Oba Ozolua died at the Battle of Uzia in 1504, the succession crisis erupted. After the humiliation of the coffin test proved Esigie’s claim, Arhuanran declared war.

What followed wasn’t just a conflict between brothers. It was a war between mothers. Between sorceresses. Between two women wielding everything they had to secure their sons’ futures.

Oloi Idia was brilliant. Her network of female spies infiltrated Arhuanran’s camp. They poisoned food supplies. They spread misinformation. They turned Udo’s own people against each other.

But Ohonmi fought back with everything she had.

She created protective amulets that made Arhuanran nearly invincible in battle. She wielded powerful magic against Idia’s mystical attacks. She countered every spy, every strategy, every move with fierce determination.

For a time, they were matched. Two queens. Two sorceresses. Two mothers fighting impossibly for their sons.

The Unbearable Losses

Then came the blow that shattered everything.

Both of Arhuanran’s sons joined the battle. Both of them were killed.

Ohonmi watched her son carry the bodies of his children home. She watched his wife, grief-stricken and unable to bear the loss, walk into Lake Odighi and drown.

All her power. All her magic. All her preparation.

It couldn’t save them.

Ohonmi’s world collapsed.
