The Tides of Life

When I lived just two blocks from the Atlantic Ocean on the north shore of Boston, it was obvious that the tides are important to be aware of. You could see the tides working and I would walk on the wet beach when the tides were out and watch the waves beat against the retaining walks when the tide was in.

There are tides in our life as well, daily tides, monthly tides, and longer tides that we don’t know the cause of, yet we feel them beating against us. Some days we are up, and some days we are down. We never know what the next day is going to bring.

And the mood of the day can turn on a dime, just as the sun can be out one minute and gone the next.

As they say, “make hay while the sun shines,” so strike while the iron is hot and make the most of each moment.

How best to deal or work with a situation that turns against us overnight or in a moment, in a blink of the eye?

I know from bitter experience that fighting against the tides of life, opposing them, is useless and only makes the situation worse. However, we can learn to use the tides.

So, if I feel my hackles getting up, best to cool my jets and back off. I know of no way to ‘mess’ with the roll of the tides and gain anything whatsoever. Other than to surf them. Give the situation time; that usually helps.

And to get in a stew thinking about it all day is another waste of time, as well.

No resistance is best. Go limp, so to speak. Work with the tides. Be passive, which means let it pass, much like in the Bible it frequently says, let it pass…. Like “This came to pass” or “That came to pass.” These situations don’t come to last, but rather pass.
