Nature News/ The Colombian Amazon is home to 8,049 species of flowering plants
The Colombian Amazon is home to 8,049 species of flowering plants, representing 36% of the botanical diversity recorded throughout the Amazon region — second only to Brazil, according to a report by the UNAL (National University) newspaper.
In an inventory of 150 vegetation types, palm groves dominated by genera such as Aiphanes, Bactris, Socratea, Euterpe, and Attalea were highlighted, along with forests of Brosimum, Ocotea, Protium, and Eschweilera, which make up one of the largest continuous expanses of natural vegetation in the tropics.
The region functions as a center for the dispersal of biological lineages, with a historical influence on other areas of the country. Its climatic conditions — with annual rainfall ranging from 2,400 to 3,920 mm — favor high ecological diversity.
The presence of indigenous peoples and protected territories, along with landscapes such as Chiribiquete and La Lindosa, reinforces its strategic role in Amazonian conservation.
