My McDonald’s Dad

My McDonald’s Dad — A Poem by Mairead Vaughan, inspired by her friend’s daughter
When I was eight, my father left home,
Overnight, his heart turned to stone. He fell out of love with my mother, And into the arms of another.
I saw him just every Saturday, And squirmed as he talked in a surface way. It’s hard to bond over Big Macs and chips, I felt angry and sick, my stomach in bits.
He never knew if I was happy or sad, He was just an acquaintance — my McDonald’s Dad. I couldn’t count on him with homework or school, Or for gentle advice when my world felt cruel.
He never knew when my heart would break, He only knew I liked chocolate milkshake. I thought it was his job to protect us, Instead, he just fed us with chicken McNuggets.
Trust was broken, our family changed, My Mum is my best friend — my Dad is estranged. I hope that someday I’ll no longer be mad, He’s just a man… my McDonald’s Dad.
