Childhood as a place we can never return to
There is a quiet kind of grief that does not announce itself. It does not arrive all at once neither does it demand to be noticed.
Childhood as a place we can never return to
There is a quiet kind of grief that does not announce itself. It does not arrive all at once neither does it demand to be noticed.
It appears in small moments- when something feels familiar but not the same, when a memory comes back softer than it used to be, when you realize that something you once lived in has now become something you can only think about.
Childhood is not just a time of your life. It is a place. And the worst part about it is that we can never return to it.
You can visit the streets you grew up in, sit in the same rooms, listen to the same songs, and still always feel like something is missing. Because what made those moments what they are right now now was not just where you were but also who you were.
That version of you- the one who experienced things without overthinking them, without questioning them, without fully understanding them- no longer exists the same way.
As a child, life felt different in ways that are very difficult to explain. Time moved slower. Days felt longer. The future never felt urgent. You were never constantly aware of what you needed to become or where you even needed to be. You simply just existed with life instead of trying to shape it like how we are doing it right now.
Now that everything is more defined. More structured. More real. You notice time passing. You think about decisions, consequences, direction. Even in moments that should feel simple, there is always a quiet awareness that runs.
And that awareness changes everything.
It is not that life becomes worse. It just becomes heavier. More intentional. Less effortless.
That is why nostalgia feels this way. it is not always remembering something good. When you realize that something you once lived in has now become something you can only think about. You are not just missing a moment- you are missing a version of you without hesitation.
There is something unsettling about understanding that you can not return to that state. That no matter how much you try, you can not unlearn whatever you learnt, can not unknow time, can not go back to experiencing life with that simplicity.
So you are left with memories that feel close and distant at the same time. Close enough to remember clearly. Distant enough to know they no longer belong to your present.
And maybe that is what growing up actually is.
No moving forward, but learning how to live with awareness that some parts of your life are only accessible through memory.
Childhood never disappears all at once. It fades super quietly. It becomes something you think about rather than something you live inside.
And one day, without realizing when it happened, you understand that you already left it behind.
Not dramatically.
Not suddenly.
Just slowly, without being asked.
And maybe the hardest part is not that it is gone.
But that you did not know it was ending while you were still in it.
