Kantara and the world of Kula Deivam
Everyone has been talking about the movie Kantara, the first movie and the most recent which is Kantara Chapter 1. My focus for this article is more from the perspective of what the film aims to share to the world. Here it goes…
The world of mystery steeped in traditional kula deviam rituals and praying is something that has existed for centuries within the Indian tradition which is now being brough to light.
The term Kula means clan, lineage, or family, and Deivam means deity or divine being. The Kula Deivam is believed to be the guardian deity of one’s ancestral lineage — a divine protector chosen by one’s forefathers. Historically, ancient Hindu families or clans often adopted a local deity (village goddess, form of Shiva, Vishnu, or Murugan, etc.) that they believed safeguarded their family’s prosperity, fertility, and moral balance. The Kula Deivam is often shared by an entire lineage, regardless of where its members live today.
Today, many view Kula Deivam less as a superstition and more as a symbol of ancestral gratitude and cultural continuity. Visiting the deity’s temple during life milestones like marriage, childbirth, or career transitions symbolizes honoring the past while seeking blessings for the future.
From a psychological and sociological perspective:
- Identity and belonging: Worshiping a Kula Deivam provides a sense of continuity and rootedness, connecting individuals to their lineage and heritage.
- Moral compass: The tradition acts as a symbolic reminder of family values, duties, and ethics inherited from ancestors.
- Collective healing: Rituals performed together strengthen family cohesion, help process grief (especially during ancestral rites), and reinforce shared meaning.
Connecting all the dots together and weaving a tapestry of folkore, exsiquite story telling and culture, presents us with Kantara! Love it!
