Cool Vibes… Mostly! | The Gypsy Paradox
To understand the highs and lows of generative AI and using AI as a co-creator, you first have to meet Gypsy, my loyal Labrador. Gypsy is the very definition of a “good girl.” She is diligent, eager to please, and will follow an instruction to a T. But Gypsy also has a specific, endearing quirk: if I pretend to throw a ball and send her searching for a ball that isn’t there, she won’t stop to tell me I’m being ridiculous. She will search every bush, run in frantic, diligent circles, and look back at me with absolute devotion, waiting for me to realize the mistake.
This is the Gypsy Paradox. AI is exactly like that dog — it is so desperate to satisfy the user that it will follow you right over a cliff of flawed logic. It oscillates wildly between the sublime and the ridiculous. One moment, it is architecting a complex solution that saves hours of manual labor; the next, it is going around in circles, repeating the same basic error. I wish AI would push back a bit more aggressively. We need a partner that challenges us and encourages better outcomes, rather than a “yes-bot” that chases non-existent balls just because we asked.
As the initial “vibe coding” high wears off, the reality of steady, consistent delivery sets in. While AI can build at breakneck speed, the inherent discipline of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is required to keep the ship steady. There seems to be a distinct reluctance when I ask the model to perform the “un-cool” parts of the job — like retroactively creating a comprehensive specification document or drafting a testing plan. It requires constant nudging to document its own work in its entirety. This creates a massive gap: in a world of free-flowing, AI-generated applications, who is actually responsible for maintaining architectural integrity?
Furthermore, speed should not come at the cost of maintainability. Developing quickly with a model is exhilarating, but ignore Systems Thinking at your own peril. We must consider interconnectedness, feedback loops, and clear boundaries. To truly move from a cool experiment to a stable enterprise solution, we must look beyond the prompt and return to the foundational principles of engineering.
The vibes… while mostly cool, require a steady hand on the leash!
