Ravelstein-Book Review

Saul Bellow’s Ravelstein tells the story of Abe Ravelstein, a Jewish professor of philosophy renowned among his students for preparing them to navigate the highest levels of American political life, advocacy, and bureaucracy. The novel is narrated by his friend Chick, himself a successful writer, who encourages Ravelstein to publish a book of his political and philosophical ideas. The resulting work catapults Ravelstein to sudden wealth and a lavish lifestyle.

The novel is steeped in philosophical discourse, drawing on thinkers from Nietzsche and Sartre to Plato and Montaigne. These reflections span critiques of Europe, Asia, and the Americas, while also weaving in accounts of Nazi survivorship, Jewish identity, life under Eastern European communism, and the complexities of contemporary American politics. Alongside these intellectual explorations, Bellow presents Ravelstein’s personal history — his relationship with his parents, his student and partner Nikki, and Chick’s own entanglements with his ex-wife Vela and his current partner Rosamund. A host of other characters shape the trajectory of Ravelstein’s life, culminating in his AIDS diagnosis and his request that Chick write his memoir.

Reading Ravelstein was, for me, a harrowing and difficult experience. The novel is dense with references to French culture, literary allusions, and philosophical vocabulary that often felt beyond my grasp. Its innuendos and layered meanings were challenging to decipher, and as someone new to American literature, I found the text heavy with jargon and at times inaccessible. Nevertheless, I persevered to the end. While I struggled to enjoy it, I recognize that readers with greater erudition may find its intellectual richness rewarding. For me, it was more of an endurance test than a pleasure, but it offered a glimpse into the demanding world of Bellow’s literary style.
