Musette of the Escargot — A Gothic Poem from the Tomb Fish Universe

【Musette of the Escargot】 Neko KuromiCaracoles, ca-ca-ra, ca-ra-coles, ca-ca

The town is cheerful again today, People passing, coming, spinning round, passing by. Everyone’s heart gets broken, everyone plays at love.

Caracoles, ca-ca-ra, ca-ra-coles, ca-ca

Good things and bad things — they’re all the same, you know. We just keep moving, moving on, Singing as we go, Tilting our heads, gazing sadly at the sky.

Caracoles, ca-ca-ra, ca-ra-coles, ca-ca

Somewhere I hear a snail seller crying out, “Caracole!”

The sunset flickers, The evening dims. Everyone’s searching for happiness, But really —

Cake, skirts, ribbons, hair, Bags, hands, legs, That kind of happiness is plenty enough.

Even when it gets dark, it’s all right. It’s fine to be selfish, too.

Caracoles, ca-ca-ra, ca-ra-coles, ca-ca

We rush, we get hurt, we misunderstand — Still, we stand back up and sing again.

I’m not pitiful at all. I don’t need television, magazines, or important people. No one here is truly miserable. There are no bad people, no good people either.

That’s simply what being human means.

Calaveran, la-ca-ra-can, Caracoles

Today and tomorrow, we go on living.

Calaveran, ca-ca-ra, ca-ra-coles, Carroña — ña!!

This troublesome world? No, thank you.

But daytime and nighttime, worries and lovers — Everything bends gently to your liking.

There are no enemies waiting for us ahead. Just close your eyes And dream.

Let’s catch happiness At a snail’s gentle pace. Like a snail, slowly, Let’s take happiness in our hands.

■■I play with words like these:■■

Caracoles (snails — a living, soft body) Calavera (a skull — the structure that remains after death) Carroña (carrion — a body in the process of decomposition) Caca (excrement — a byproduct of life, what is expelled)

These words are connected at the level of Latin phonemes:

ca / la / ro / co / ña

In other words, this is not wordplay of meaning alone, but a cycle of life expressed through sound itself.
