There Is No Reality, Only The Version Your Mind Agreed To See (Blame & Perception)

Why do I blame others for my problems?

Blaming others is avoiding responsibility. True. It is also not where the blame starts, which means telling someone to stop blaming does nothing about the thing underneath that made the blame feel necessary in the first place.

Blame is a relief mechanism. When something goes wrong and the source of that wrong is located outside you, the self is protected from examination. The pain of the situation is real but the pain of self-examination is avoided. Blame provides that specific relief, quickly, automatically, and without requiring any deliberate choice.

That is why it runs so automatically. Not because people are dishonest or cowardly. Because the brain identifies the fastest available relief from discomfort and initiates it. Locating the source of the problem outside the self is faster than examining the self. So the blame runs first.

Now here is the compounding problem. Every time blame is used as relief, the pattern of locating sources outside the self gets stronger. And over time, the person loses the reflex of looking inward at all, because looking inward has been systematically bypassed for long enough that the bypass is now the default path.

Trust me, I know exactly what this pattern looks like. It is not dramatic. It does not feel like blame from the inside. It feels like accurate observation. He did that. They caused this. That prevented me.

The move is not to stop seeing what others did. Some of it is accurate. The move is to ask what you are choosing to do from here, starting from the position you are currently in, regardless of who or what contributed to getting you here.

What would you do differently if you removed every external source from the equation and looked only at what is inside your control right now?

How does perception shape reality?

Perception is everything. Close. Missing the one part that makes it actually usable.

Reality exists. That part is not in dispute. What is in dispute is the claim that you access it directly, because you do not. No human does. Every person encounters reality through a lens shaped by his internal state, his current mood, his prior experience, and the accumulated conditioning of everything that has been written on him since birth.

Two people observe the identical event and interpret it in entirely different ways, because the processing that happens between receiving the information and experiencing it differs completely. The same person can observe the same situation at two different times and arrive at two different conclusions, because the lens changed. The reality did not change. The lens did.

That is why reality is neutral. It does not carry meaning. What gives any situation its weight is entirely the product of the perception the observer brings to it.

Now you tell me, but that means nothing is objectively real. Well no. The event happened. The event is real. The meaning you assigned to it is yours. Those are two different things. Confusing them is what keeps most people stuck, because they treat their interpretation of what happened as the thing that happened, which means the interpretation can never be questioned without feeling like you are denying reality.

Pernualism calls the honest approach Neutralized Perception. Not the removal of the lens. The understanding of it well enough that it stops making choices on your behalf.

Why do two people see the same situation completely differently?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Sure. The more interesting question is why two people can stand in the exact same moment and walk away living in completely different versions of it.

Two people see the same situation differently because the instrument they are using to perceive it is different. And that instrument is not their eyes. It is the entire accumulated system of prior experience, conditioning, current mood, and internal state that processes the incoming information before it reaches conscious awareness.

By the time the experience registers in the mind as something you are perceiving, it has already been filtered, interpreted, and shaped by everything that has been written on you up to this moment. You do not perceive the event. You perceive your brain’s interpretation of the event, built on the prediction it formed before the event fully arrived.

That is why two people in the same room can observe the same conversation and come away with completely different accounts of what happened. Neither is lying. Both are reporting the version of the event that their internal system produced.

Now that creates a specific problem. Most people treat their perception as the correct one and attribute the other person’s different perception to bias, misunderstanding, or bad faith. Because from inside your perception, it does not feel like a perception. It feels like accurate observation.

That is why the Pernualist practice of Neutralized Perception matters. Not objectivity, because objectivity is not available. But the honest acknowledgment that the perception you have right now is filtered, and the filter is worth examining before you treat the perception as settled truth.

When did you last discover that your perception of a situation was shaped by something that had nothing to do with the situation itself?
